highly unlikely, but can any biologists/chemists out there find out my blood type?

This message board is for discussing anything in any way remotely connected with St Andrews, the University or just anything you want. Welcome!

Postby DinahX on Fri Oct 28, 2005 7:26 pm

I don't suppose anybody in the biology/chemistry department could find out my blood type could they? I know this sounds faintly wacky, but i've always wanted to know and i asked the doctor and they said they wouldn't unless there was something wrong with me. Bizarre! I have a good reason actually, although it is quite private. If anybody would be willing to help me i'll gladly tell you!
my email is blackdove1@gmail.com, so drop me a line in the admittedly unlikely chance you's be willing to help me out!

You can go and give blood at some point in november. The Blood Transfusion people will be in Younger Hall, but I can't remember the date.

When you give blood they tell you what your blood group is - so this way you find out what group you belong to, and you could save someones life.

I can tell you to a probability of 25% right now, if you'd like.

The Scottish Blood Transfusion Service people will be in Younger Hall on the following days:

Monday 14th November (1pm-5pm)
Tuesday 15th November (1pm-5pm)

So pop along then; everyone should be back from Reading Week too, so go along to Younger Hall and donate!

The bird with the thorn in its breast, it follows an immutable law. It is driven by it knows not what to impale itself, and die singing. At the very instant that the thorn enters there is no awareness in it of the dying to come; it simply sings and sings until there is not the life left to sing another note. But we, when we put the thorns in our breasts, we know. We know and still we do it. Still we do it.

Does it not say on your birth certificate or other documents?

I thought it was something everyone was supposed to have been told int heir lives just in case, especially women so that they know their Rh factor.

You could ask your parents what blood types they have and work out from there your possible types. If they're both O types, you're all set.

They don't want gay blood? Is it different?

Apparently so - it's said that there is a higher risk of AIDS in gay men than straight. I don't know if there's any truth behind that, but it seems irrelevant to me as all blood taken is tested anyway.

I don't think it's on British birth certificates...at least, it's not on mine. I haven't a clue what blood group I am either...guess I'll find out if I ever become pregnant, although they'd probably have to sedate me to get the needle anywhere near my arm!

Don't they just give you O blood if you're in an accident and need a transfusion, until the proper blood matching has been carried out anyway? I'm sure even people who know their blood groups don't always go around carrying that piece of information on them.

Even if you know your blood type doctors would never rely on it if they had to treat you. They would always check it (better safe than sorry I guess). Only O negative can be given to anyone. And I will never understand why people are scared of needles?!

btw, does anybody know if you can donate blood if you are on the pill? Contraceptives, that is, not little blue pills that say "Ex" on them...
