When will the Christmas lights be taken down?

Postby Rilla on Sun Jan 15, 2006 5:08 pm

Does anyone else find it abit silly to still have the Christmas lights still up around town mid January?
Not only are they still up, they're still being lit. It's beginning to annoy me...

maybe they're winter lights, in which case they could be up for a while.

i put Christmas lights on my bookcase, but they make the flat look really nice, and lots of other people have fairy lights up all year round.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere last year that they were indeed winter lights, and would be up until the end of January/start of Feb. I wonder how much the electricity they use costs though. Another waste of council tax, probably.

I do know that the Merchants' Association are rather pleased by the new lights they've been buying over the past few years, so I guess they'll be there a while yet! :)

In the catholic church the christmas period (i.e. celebrations related to the birth of christ) continues until candlemas, which is some time in Ferbruary I think??? So technically (according to the Catholic Church) they can stay up until then.

Are you kidding?! I love the lights (Christmas or winter) and I'm very pleased they're still up and lit. Since it still gets dark here rather early, it's nice to have the lights to brighten up Market Street and make things less depressing, espeically during exams.

Actually in the Catholic Church decorations are taken down after Epiphany (January 6th in England, Sunday nearest January 6th in Scotland)

Edited to correct spelling

I'm pretty sure the ideas surrounding the bad luck of leaving things up after christmas came before the invention of the electric lightbulb
