Union doors closing on a Tuesday

Postby Dave the Explosive Newt on Tue Mar 07, 2006 9:15 pm

Do they still do that ridiculous thing when they close the doors at 11:30 on a Tuesday?

I've just come back from the Union, although wasted my friends assured me the doors shut at 11:30, but I was told to down my Brown Ale because they started chucking out at 1am. I'm sure it's 2 they chuck out at, it's just no more admissions are allowed after 11pm.

The unions licence is 1 am Saturday to Thursday, with 2 am on Fridays sometimes for big events like Zane Low a special request is made for a 2 am icence on a Saturday.
The 11:30 curfew is still in place on a Tusday, but depending o a number of factors it may or may not be inforced. I would recommend being in the Union by 11:30 because the call will be made at 11:30 and you don't want to be disappointed do you?

Crude Tuesday policy and attitude.

Postby The chap on Wed Mar 08, 2006 9:55 am

The Union Tuesday policy is shrewd but shitty. Naturally we will often feel inclined to leave those places that have great drink offers on a Tuesday night in order to allow ourselves to take advantage of the extra hour the union licence has; Tuesday is one of our big drinking nights here, what with Wed being an academically quieter day for most. And clearly the union has done it in response to those cheap drink offers that were distracting potential student drinkers from the union. Still, it is pretty shitty that instead of a decent alcoholic incentive, like some cheap drinks offers, the union chooses to flex the licence advantage. Most people I know will go to the union and forego the last 30-45 minutes elsewhere, but not without feeling pissed that they have been railroaded into the union. It's a cheap option for the union to take, but apart from whinging, there's probably not a great deal we can do.
Another thing, there really is no need for Union staff to be so rude to people when informing them that they cannot get in after this time. On other days we are customers, and whilst I appreciate the union doesn't generally dwell too heavily on customer service, there's no need to speak to us so crudely and harshly. We're not beneath you, stop treating us as if we are.

Frankly, if your attitude is that you'd rather have a lot of crap quality cheap alcohol in a shitty atmosphere than a litle good quality alcohol in a great atmosphere then I don't have much sympathy with you when the Union cynically exploits you.

The Union's prices can't get any lower. They're already the lowest in town for most drinks.

Uncharacteristially, I agree with you. I would always choose to have one drink I enjoy in a comfortable atmosphere than neck four in a hell hole.

Because we do not believe that it is acceptable to promote binge drinking, the Association does not have happy hours or similar deals. It will soon be illegal for pubs to offer such deals.

The reason for the Tuesday night curfew is that there were large numbers of people coming to the Union late on who were totally wasted. Outside, they appeared fine, but when they got into the warmth, they would lose any semblance of sobriety.

Can large wooden horses get in after 11.30? I think I have a plan.

Seems like a good reason. It's still fucking annoying for responsible drinkers though.

Clearly the East Fife Licencing Board in Cupar told the Union to severely control the footfall around midnight, if you read the May Licencing Board minutes. I'm not sure if they're online, but they are definately within the public domain, it being a court of justice and all.
Those omnicient beings who solely control who can and cannot serve alcohol, on which days, and at what times do not appreciate "happy hour" drinks offers. They'd rather take the Union's licence away (as they HAVE done before!) than see the Union have Boozeday-type offers. Evidence of this can be found in those same Cupar minutes.
The Union's neighbours also enjoy complaining about noise, blaming it on the Union/ students when it's clearly coming from the Vic or the Raisin. Police testimony corroborates this. The Board accepts that the Union responds responsibly when there are noise complaints and accepts the suggestion that the noise the neighbors think comes from the Union actually comes from other pubs in the area. One way to prove this is by shutting the doors at 11:30 in the Union.
If there is any noise complaints between 11:45 and 12:45 (imagine the Vic, the Raisin, Aikmans, the Lizard/Oak Rooms, TPs, and 1 Golf Place all let out at midnight within 1 block of the Union), then Mr. Boyle (the licence holder for the Union) can say "It wasn't us. We didn't have hundreds of people spilling out of our establishment at the same time." It's the lines of people and the drunken milling about at closing time that makes all the noise and loses pubs their late licences.

So it all boils down to not having a rush of people at midnight when the other pubs close, or else the Union would lose its licence and the other pubs would not.

[s]Notice I didn't write "we" or "us". I wrote conclusions which can be got from reading documents in the public domain. I'm not trying to give the impression that I'm at all still involved in Union decision-making and would appreciate responders respecting that. I'm sure those who are involved in Union decision-making would also appreciate that I'm not trying to butt in.[/s]

No, if you don't like it, voice your concerns to the relevant people, motion the relevant people, or get elected so that you are one of the relevant people.
