I take it one of the criteria isn't fair rent prices for students?

Out of interest, what is this fairtrade steering group? I haven't heard about it.

http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/get_involved_university.htm

To become a Fairtrade University or college 5 goals must be met.

1. The Student Union and the university authorities both create a Fairtrade policy incorporating these five goals.
2. Fairtrade foods are made available for sale in all campus shops. Fairtrade foods are used in all cafés/restaurants/bars on campus. Where this is not possible, there is a commitment to begin to use Fairtrade foods in these establishments as soon as it becomes possible to do so.
3. Fairtrade foods (for example, coffee and tea) are served at all meetings hosted by the university and the SU, and are served in all university and SU management offices.
4. There is a commitment to campaign for increased Fairtrade consumption on campus.
5. Set up a Fairtrade Steering Group.

P.S. We're not on that list :S

Damn I hate the internet.

Either

A) You didn't get the very obvious humour in my post

or

B) I am now not getting the obvious reverse humour in your post

:S

I think we should start using humour tags

My SRC Environment & Ethics Committee took on that role.

When it says all meetings and all shops etc in the goals, does it really mean all, or just ones where food/drink would be served anyway?

So, in real terms, what changes shall we be seeing to our university experience?

You get a warm fuzzy feeling inside when you buy a cup of coffee knowing that it is a fairtrade cup of coffee and the inner satisfaction that by you drinking a cup of coffee the world is a better place. You also get some tasteful posters of smiling poor people from Africa and Asia thanking you for buying fairtrade. There, don't you feel better already?

Yes, just the ones where there is food, and I made the same point about our own policy document. It's worded poorly; they're not proposing to make students and staff consume food (fairtrade or otherwise) 24/7! :)

most of the changes are already in place.
Halls have fairtrade tea and coffee, sugar, bananas etc
The university and SA have fairtrade policies. which means they have to serve ft at their official meetings and have it in their vending machines (still working on the vending machines).
beatons, bess, old union have FT as much as possible and are trying to increase.
Staff and students are encouraged to buy fairtrade products, and there have to be awarness raising events going on a permanent basis.
yay!

So we've changed our choice of tea and biscuits, then announced that we've done so, and promised to change our choice of cake when we can.

Pathetic.

For once I'd like to see these 'student activists' campaigning for something that would make a real difference to the 3rd world, like abolishing EU trade barriers.

How about a university boycott of french goods whilst their government continues to defend CAP. The abolition of which would do more at a stroke then fair trade will ever do.
