Industrial Dispute Demo Tomorrow - You Had Better Be There

Postby Ben Reilly on Thu May 04, 2006 3:12 pm

There is going to be a demonstration tomorrow, starting at 1PM in St Mary's Quad.

This is the chance for students to put even more pressure on those who are taking the action that is putting examinations at risk.

The local AUT leadership were willing to settle, but an unfortunate minority of staff were more concerned about the rule book than ensuring students were not hurt.

Please contact everybody you know and get them to come along.

This is the last chance we have to save the examinations diet.

I mean that if papers are not in by very, very early next week, then the provisional timetable will have to be changed.

It probably will have to be changed, given that (as I've said on the other thread) they're determined not to budge until a motion has been passed on exam papers at the EGM, which is not until the end of next week.

My lecturers just e-mailled me - all of them have agreed to set fourth year exams against advice from the AUT. Pass this on to your lecturers and they may wish to do the same :)

Indeed French, too. Though the later written exam is still in limbo, oral exams due to start on Monday will take place.

Going against the dispute is a pretty big and difficult decision, so IMO, fair play.

How many people know about this protest? Do you expect many people to turn up?

I take it you won't be sending out an e-mail this time, then, seeing as the University won't exactly approve...

As an aside, we have just received confirmation that David Bleiman, Assistant General Secretary of the AUT, will be coming to the Education Subcommittee meeting tomorrow at 4:15pm in the Committee Room, so here is your chance to ask him any questions or make any points that you have.

Best wishes,

But the exam timetables are confirmed now.

Surely if confirmed exams are changed, it's hardly our fault if we've arranged work that can't be moved/ flights etc.

Out of interest, why is it St Mary's?
