not as scary as it sounds, just remember that teenager repellant? the sound thing? Well, the students have turned it into a ringtone that the teachers can't hear.

I can hear it! ouch! i wouldn't use that as a ringtone. what's wrong with setting it on vibrate?

That was brain melting. I hope it doesn't catch on, otherwise some people will end up having their phones smashed to pieces by mobs of people. Then again, this could be a good thing ...

i could hear it fine, but then i think i've been in enough badly EQ'd venues to not be bothered by it!

painful. very painful. if this is so that teachers cant hear the phones ringing then surely they are going to notice when half the class yelps in pain/surprise of just generally calling out "what that hell is that noise" - not to mention that after its rang and is picked up then the teachers surely must notice that the pupil is talking into the phone and confiscate it.

Yeah this cropped up on head-fi too. Its a good test for the condition of your hearing, which degrades in the ability to discern high frequency noise as you age. Also good for blowing up speaker cones.

What struck me about it (apart from its extreme unpleasantness) is that if it gets widespread use there will be exactly the same problems that always occur when several people have the same ringtone, somewhat reducing the stealthiness when everyone in the room suddenly stops working to check their mobile phone.

Quite ingenious of the person who thought of it, however.
If Jack Bauer was put in a room with Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler and Nina Myers and handed a gun with two bullets, he'd shoot Nina twice.

Saw this one the other day, it really is quite painful to the ears. I daresay it'll only be a short fad really, and indeed I don't really see why people can't just use vibrate (although, some people's phones I can clearly hear vibrating from a little distance away, depending how noisy they happen to be).

Kids these days, eh?

Do you think the reason we can all hear it is to do with MP3 compression? Perhaps its just aliased sound. Is there anyone who can't hear it?

Not sure what you mean by aliased sound, but for the hell of it I had a look at the waveform using Cool Edit Pro and can confirm that it's a pure high-frequency tone. Quite quiet, though.

Shall play it to my dad if I get a chance and see if he can hear it, since I know for a fact he can't hear some sounds that are a lower frequency than that.

Played it to my dad, he doesn't hear a thing. Having had a look at the wave form he thinks the tone is about 16,000 Hz.

Well, one of MP3's compression techniques is to sample sound at only the bounds of "normal" human hearing. This means that sounds which are outwith this bound, if not properly filtered, get undersampled and are therefore played back as a lower pitch.

Aliasing is simply the reproduction of artefacts (in this case sound) which were not in the original.

I would suggest that the reason most of us can hear it is that the MP3 compression algorithm was used on an unfiltered source and caused a lower (relatively) pitched sound which we can hear.

23 and I can't hear it. But the next door neighbour's a right annoying bint, and her kids are scum, so I've made a 60 minute cd of this to play very loudly on summer afternoons while i'm relaxing with the cider.

So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

"I make sure the shit stays off the fan."
