Hotels in St. Andrews

Postby n01 on Mon Nov 20, 2006 9:12 pm

What are some hotels or rather nice places to stay that can accommodate about four people in St. Andrews? My friend's dad and a few of his friends are coming over to St. Andrews and I can't think of any good places for them to stay.

Any ideas?

[Admin edit: the Sinner's main board isn't the place for reviews of hotels]

Rant over, but safe to say I find the Old Course over-rated, and most definitely guilty of paying for its 5-star ratings!

My company for one has agreed never to use their facilities again and we're looking to use the Russacks (is that the right name?)

Depending on the size of your friend's dad's wallet, you might want to try one of the following places:

Rusacks Hotel (from £60 pppn) ****
Golf Hotel (from £85 pppn) ****
The Inn on North Street (from £60 pppn) ***

Of those, I would say that Rusacks is best value for money. Those prices are for twin rooms.

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

Don't forget the Fairmont St Andrews (aka the Bay Hotel to you and me), which is 5*, but of course the price reflects this.

The Fairmont (nee Bay) seems to rank itself higher than it ought, too. The Rusacks is one of my favourite hotels in town, even though I only ever visit it for coffee in the sun lounge, and have never stayed there.

Have you taken this up with the Old Course? I suspect the QA manager doesn't constantly check The Sinner to ensure their customers are happy.

I could not agree with you more on the Old Course Hotel - very disappointing, given the received wisdom about the place.
I stayed in the Rusacks for a week a while back and had mixed feelings about it. First room was in one of the older wings and was both a bit pokey (fair enough - it's an old building) and poorly soundproofed. Honestly, it was easier to hear your neighbours chatting (or, as my neighbours appeared to have been on the lash the night before, chundering thunderously at 6am) than in any uni hall of residence I'd stayed in.
Changed room to the modern bit overlooking the 18th fairway, which was terrific. The staff are helpful, the breakfasts are good and the bar can be kept open apparently indefinitely (we found) so it can be a decent option, provided one exercises a bit of caution as to room booking.
Rufflets is supposed to be terrific but it obviously isn't located as conveniently for town.

The BEST B&B

11 Queens gardens, beautiful, clean and friendly. Amazing breakfast and cheaper than the hotels in town.

Looks like people love the old Course. I'd go for number 2 on the list.

Both 11 Queens Gardens and 18 Queens Terrace B&Bs are wonderful, and the women that run them are very friendly. I stayed in both with my mum before semester started (ended up in 18 Queens Terrace for a night or two because the other was fully booked - the two owners are rather good friends). Anyways, they do book up rather fast depending on when it is you're looking for people to visit, so keep that in mind. A lovely experience in both, though, and I'd highly recommend either.

I can vouch for 11 Queens Gardens. The Debating Society kindly put me up there, it's quiet and spacious, my room had a terrific view of St Mary's and the lady who runs it was thoroughly pleasant and made an excellent breakfast.

As for hotels, the Old Course is wildly over-rated as has been pointed out - The Rusacks is okay, but I'd pick The Scores over it any day. But if you have a bit of money to spend and don't mind being a little out of town, Rufflets simply cannot be beaten.

I hear there's an amazing b&b on North Castle Street, but it's very hidden. Anyone have any more details on this?

Ooooh...6 years as a sinner and thats the first post of mine to ever be edited by a mod!

Bit harsh if you ask me though, how does my post warrant exclusion on the basis of a review when just about every other post here holds some form of opinion on a hotel?

In the style of these other censored posts then:

I don't recommend the Old Course as my stay there saw me put up with an ill equipped and poorly maintained room, pompous staff, and inadequate services given the money my company and I were paying them!

Ewan we felt actions spoke louder than words. The company I work for is a pretty large global brand and so the Old Course can rest assured they won't have us as clients for some time yet.

Romantic - There were cynical chats amongst my colleagues that the only reason people 'like' the Old Course is because its ON the Old Course. Any golf fan would probably forgive any sign of short-givings for the sake of being ON the home of golf.

....this is probably going to be censored again isn't?

...I'm blacklisted for life now :o(

I thought the sinner was here for us to share our wisdom (ha!) as well as keeping alive our fetish for being pedants?

Paranoid's review was based on his actual experience and is no different to what most people have said if you google for reviews of the old course. How was that a breach of the T&Cs??

If the Old course are concerned their reputation will be destroyed then perhaps they need to buck up their ideas.

The way they treat their staff is horrendous. I had to support one Muslim student who resigned due to constant bullying and was told by her line manager at the hotel that she shouldn't blow herself up in the hotel. If the managers are like that then no wonder staff don't bother trying hard.

Someone asked for honest opinions - Paranoid gave one - let's quit with the over zealous censorship!

Will we also be censored if we criticise the uni? Fife Council? Scottish Parliament?

Maybe a bit conspiracy theorist, but I'd be surprised if I was censored because I bad mouthed a specific local business...but then again I may be wrong!

I had friends who worked at the Old Course, and I'm sure they were great at their job, my general observation was that being a young professional I felt I was treated poorly compared to other patrons...and the gold Amex didn't seem to change any of that :op

Rufflets is gorgeous, but pricey. And it may not be the kind of hotel where your friend's dad and his mates stay for a few days. And it is a bit out of town, but the rooms I've seen are all very nice and the food is excellent.

It's only overzealous censorship if you don't own the site.
If you're responsible for the entire site's contents however, it's a different story.

I don't particularly want to wait until I'm sued for defamation before editing a post.

If I don't feel comfortable with a post being published on my site, I reserve the right to edit or delete it. I hardly edit anything, so when I do, you can be sure it's for good reason.

Sure I understand that, but I wouldn't say my comments were defamation in the legal sense of the word. I mean how many users of the sinner will actually use the Old Course Hotel's services, considering

a) The majority already own accomodation in St. Andrews

b) Being students (on the whole) they/we cant afford to stay there!

And if responses such as mine are unacceptable because it leaves the sinner vulnerable to legal attacks, surely the entire thread should be censored seeing as it invited a response of my sort?

Does this mean I can now sue the sinner for defamation of character/victimisation should I feel I've been harshly treated by other users posts who have gone uncensored? If so, there are alot of users out there who have had a hard time in the past...and someone strong in their own views (a.k.a. 'Bible-basher' Paul) has upset me and many others but was never censored. I guess because you don't expect a legal case thrown at you from God that he can carry on expressing his views?

I'm not bothered by your actions per-se, just find it an interesting topic given the reasons you've provided (which I respect you were in no way bound to express).

Why on earth do you constantly play the race card? Is it just me that gets pissed of at it?

My simple view on any situation of race is, if you want equality then never make race an issue yourself. The only way to ever achieve a raceless state is for everyone to follow this simple idea.

You've still gotta admit telling the kid not to blow themselves up in the hotel was going too far though...
