Pictures of Raisin Monday - are you in them?

Postby inshaala on Tue Nov 21, 2006 1:18 pm

Hi,

Well i uploaded one gallery of pictures of raisin monday and got a rather large response from people who were in the shots, so i decided to go through my shots again and upload another (smaller) gallery with more shots of people involved in the foam fight. I thought that as most of the photographers who were in the quad at the time were press photographers that no-one would be able to easily get hold of a photo of them at the occasion. So if you recognise anyone in them please tell them - i'm sure they would appreciate it :)

Here is the original gallery i posted:

http://standrews.facebook.com/album.php ... d=37102806

and this is the other one:

http://standrews.facebook.com/album.php ... d=37102806

That is all of the ones i have which are decent so dont ask me if i have any more, because although i did take more photos these are the only one in which 1. the subject is recognisable 2. the shot is a good shot.

Hope you all like them :)

I'm going to post a link in a few days of more Foam Fight Photos.

We're both using Canon 20DSLRs.

Nice pictures!

I'm going to play the idiot here and ask how on earth all you cool photographers manage to get the subject of the picture in focus, and everything else out of focus? Are crummy, bog-standard digital cameras capable of achieving this?

Some digital cameras can do it, but the basic ones tend to try to get everything in focus.

If there's a "portrait mode" on your camera, that's your best bet.
If not, then just use the blur tool in photoshop and you'll achieve a similar effect.

Power_Metal_Dom - Actually i am on a 30D - the slightly newer version of Orcas' - i assume that is you Leah? ;)

Kempy - thanks - i thought others would appreciate them more than i would with them sitting in a folder on my harddrive :)

Mehmsy - its all about the aperture on your lens. Most of those shots were taken with an f1.8 lens at 50mm or a f2.8 lens at 105mm. I dont think there are any digital compacts which would be able to give the same performance as those lenses (the 105mm costs ~£250 on its own ;) - the 50mm a bit better at £70). So without going into explanations on optics i would have to say that yes you can do it with them, but not to the same quality or extent.

I've just accepted around 22 tag requests - and one of them was blatantly not the person in question so less of the tomfoolery people! :P

Yes, I was sitting in my lecture, and thought, wait, I have the 20D. Sorry.

After the Saint comes out (where you can see lots of photos) I'll share mine.

hehe reminds me of my first year, Raisin Sunday saw me get together with what turned out to be a distantly related (academic) cousin...

Come Tuesday morning she was on the front page of the Daily Record. Apparently Prince Wills was eyeing her up during the fight, and she was one of the last to leave after having a play-cat fight with another girl in the Quad (I was in Wills' year)

...best part of the story? Wasn't Wills at all, was an Irish guy in my hall who the press all mistakened to be him when covered in foam!! He even went and sold his story to the Sun and held a press conference in the TV room!

All you need is to be standing relatively close, use a low focus ratio ("f" number) and focus on your target. Should be possible on most middle-of-the-range digital cameras, though perhaps only as far as around f/2.8.

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

Hey,
I've also got an album of Raisin photos, I was by inshaala taking photos outside and in the quad, so take a look and see if you can tag any of them for me, and then the people in them can have something to remember the day by.

I'll have a look around my camera and see what I can do.

I suppose I should have figured that out, optics and all, being a 2nd year astronomer. :P Oh well! Thanks, people.

Ah, heard someone talking about that yesterday - the pig's head. Did you manage to prove ownership of it? ;)
