So are AstroSoc doing anything?

Somehow lunar eclipses don't appear so impressive in the 24" telescope I'm running.

I bet it looks even less impressive through Colin's telescopes in Chile...

Good to stand out and watch, though.

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

When I was a child I enjoyed watching it through my telescope, seeing the Earth's shadow slowly creep over the moon was pretty cool. Looking forward to seeing it tonight.

Would be surprised if the telescope isn't being used tonight for this as it is the biggest optical telescope in the UK.

Moon is currently beautiful from where I'm sitting.

Will look pretty damn sweet rising over the Andes already in full eclipse though :-)

Probably not actually - you don't generally point big telescopes at the moon as it is too bright. But Astrosoc may be using the small ones.

Either way, for a lunar eclipse it looks pretty good without any sort of telescope.

Looked pretty impressive through everything from the naked eye to the 5" guide scope I was using. Not much to see through the 12" telescope, though.

I'd imagine the James Greg probably wasn't used for that tonight. Hopefully someone will be looking out for planets with it or something, though.

It didn't have quite the same romantic touch to it as it did last time I saw it, must have been 2004, from the shores of a fjord in western Norway. Moon a little smaller, pretty much no light pollution and a deeply glowing red...

But tonight was still wonderful nonetheless ;) !

I remember watching a lunar eclipse a few years ago. It's quite a nice sight. Everybody should see it.
