St Andrews Uni slagged off in Sunday Herald

Postby Graeme Hamilton on Sun Feb 23, 2003 12:33 pm

I read the following on the back page of today's Sunday Herald:

http://www.sundayherald.com/31699

IT'S official: St Andrews university is a joke. Once upon a time, it was a serious seat of learning; now it's merely a finishing school for yahs too thick to get into Oxbridge. Events there last week confirmed its sad decline as it garnered the kind of lurid tabloid coverage reserved for London Fashion Week and the Brit awards.

Not content with electing hunky Clement Freud as student rector, female students posed as models ahead of a charity catwalk show next month, after which they strolled around town with Prince William. You may recall that he was billeted at St Andrews in the hope that he could live a normal student life. As indeed he is, breakfasting every morning at Rusacks hotel, and very tasty it is too, even if does make a considerable dent in one's student loan.

Is this fair? I think not. Perhaps we should send a few e-mails to the author of the article...

Thats not on, just cos we put on a charity fasion show which gets a lot of publisity! Surely it only right that we get as much publisity to get as many people to come along!?! And I'd hardly say this place was FULL of yahs! Besides they're only let in on their grades, so if they're clever enough to get in here then whats wrong with that?

Lots of Unis have famous people as rector surely? The models posing. SO WHAT - it's called publisity, no? And maybe, just amybe those girls walking down street with William are just his friends - he is allowed to have freinds with whom he can walk down the street with is he not?

I think the author of the article was just grabbing at straws to make us look bad, what a fool!

Although the ya population has exploded this year, on that note.

However it was publicity for a CHARITY show, so the Herald is being kind of cheeky. Picking on us just because people will read an article that mentions a member of the royal family.

PubliCity-- maybe this uni isn't any good after all, since they seem to admit people who can't spell for shit. Shame :-P

I don't know, wasn't the "charity" show a little bit of a Yah's self indulgence. There are much better ways to raise money for charity that would have appealed to more of the university than just the pink shirt brigade.

Y'know, strange as this may seem, they never did get round to giving me any spelling and grammar classes in my Computer Science degree...

Does it matter, so long as they raise money? If you don't like it support some other charity event.
