University Challenge

Postby kdc4 on Thu Jul 12, 2007 6:14 pm

The University of St Andrews has, for the first time in three years, progressed to the filming stages of University Challenge and will be taking on Birmingham on the 30th of July (8PM BBC2, I think, though it is occasionally shown at 8:30).

Cheers,

Can they beat Norm's record?

All will be revealed.

What's Norm's record?

Who's Norm?

The great James Normington, of course! Although the captain of that infamous team was actually my other old friend, Alan Paterson. Together they scored the lowest first-round score in memory, and brought ridicule upon, well, mostly themselves, really. But it was fun for everyone else at the time.

I've no idea when Norm's lot were, but I recall being in the TV room in regs with friends when we noticed University Challenge was on and that St Andrews was in it, against Edinburgh. Considering we were all St Andrews folks, it was hard to describe how we felt at what we saw. It was terrible...

I can only hope we do better this time!

That was in 2001. As for this year... Let's just say I'm quietly confident.

Trained chimps could have scored higher than Norm and Patterson did!

Does anyone think that the our poor performance in this event could have any direct relation to the distinct lack of advertising surrounding the creation of the team?

In five years here I have only heard of one call for possible participants.

Certainly last year and the year before, I couldn't move for those posters of Paxman in a dinner jacket at a casino table. They were literally everywhere.

It was tolerably well advertised in, what, 2003. But you need halfway-decent participants as well.

For the past two years, the team selection try-outs have been advertised on the Wednesday Memos and via posters which were up for weeks on every notice board imaginable. The schools were also asked to submit the names of potential candidates. I think the performance of the team this year speaks for itself.

I'm going to take this opportunity to controversially break with standard Sinner convention:

Ahem* Good luck guys! However you perform; I'm sure you'll do us proud! Remember; it doesn't matter if you win or lose; just as long as you shoot at least one fiery arrow of sarcasm into that black fiend of the pit that is Paxman's ego!

Me too! The very best of Northern British luck!

(Though one must assume that the moment for wishing luck has passed and that the episode we are to see on July 30 was recorded some weeks ago)

Good luck for the past!
