Does anyone know where I might find a transcript of John Cleese's Rectorial Address? I believe it is entitled 'Cowardice' (in parody of J.M. Barrie's 'Courage'), but I can't find it in SAULCAT. Any ideas?

Hmm, I'd always thought that the old St Andrean maxim "don't let your degree get in the way of your education" was from Cleese's Rectorial Address, but apparently not. Does anyone know if indeed it was John Cleese who said this?

It's been widely quoted as such. I'm wondering if the speech on that site is actually incomplete - it does say "To be continued." on it, which I'm assuming is not part of the speech itself.

Not that Google is the definitive authority on the topic of everything that's ever been said in the world, but a quick search for "don't let your degree get in the way of your education" reveals only a couple of links to the Sinner and a much larger number of links to Durham. There's even one American writer claiming that his father told him "never let your schooling get in the way of your education".

It was certainly Twain who said "I have never let my schooling interfere with my education", which is basically the same thing. I do have good reasons for wondering whether Cleese said the above, however.

I've only ever seen - in sabbs' welcomes in Praeco and the like - the quotation as "I hope you have a super time, and that a few of you get degrees without in any way allowing them to interfere with your education". I'd guess that they were quoting from one of his Rector's welcomes.
