no fucking shit, if you put your fucking details on a fucking website, then no shit applications that use the fucking site can take it, if you dont put your date of birth on there it cant fucking steal it.

this sound like some stupid fucking journalist thinking they are clever.

Rarg!

EDIT:- this has been known for ages anyway, they discovered dick all. I am stressed about this for two reasons - i do social networking research, and my mac is fucking up right now -not displaying text properly hence multiple edits :(

How exactly does this make the BBC a "fuckwit"? The reporter is just pointing out something that a lot of people may not realise about their facebook privacy. Just because everyone else isn't clever enough to think about this issue doesn't mean that they shouldn't do reports on this kind of thing. Otherwise, how would people like Ric Romero still have jobs?

because they claim they discovered a flaw in facebook - and they didn't,

Granted, it would have been better if the reporter had used "uncovered" rather than "discovered".

Ahh I see what you mean, discovery does imply something quite epic, which it really isn't. Still useful for those of us with every possible application on their profile

Right, so the bbc has run a story about something that doubtless thousands of people wouldn't know anything about and this is a bad thing how? I mean, why report on anything when those in the know figured it out ages ago anyway?

I'm very cynical about cynicism.

Loads of people knew about the thousands killed daily in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet the BBC still reported it to us. Lazy.

except that they say that it is a flaw in facebook rather than just being a property of putting your stuff online.

people being killed daily in iraq isn't the same thing- it's actually true!

...and, as has been previously pointed out, they claim it is some kind of major investigation and scoop by the BBC. The fact is however, many other sources have reported this finding previously, as well as it being common(ish) knowledge.

I think this is the point that the OP made.

Sure, they can report on whatever they want, but they shouldn't claim that they discovered it if others did before them.
