Songs that have you near/in tears

Postby Power Metal Dom on Sat Jun 07, 2008 8:38 pm

Not as in god-awful songs! But songs that have personally significant lyrics or emotive instrumentation or whatever it is something which makes you just well up.

I really can't explain it but the following songs just bring a lump to my throat and make me blink a lot and I get a wave of emotion that often comes out as a disguised laugh. Yeah it's hard to explain :)

John Lennon - Imagine
Voyager Theme Tune (!)
Harry Nilsson - Without You
Michael Andrews - Mad World
Don McLean - Vincent
Queen - Save Me

(Btw I know I'm setting myself up for 'emo fag', 'pussy', 'big feckin jessy' etc remarks but I don't give a toss and I'd genuinely like to know what moves others)

Delays - Valentine (It took me ages to discover/work out that it's about Hurricane Katrina)

http://www.lyricsmania.com/lyrics/delay ... 90301.html

It's an awesome dance song, and I listen to it a lot, but I just can't sing along to it - my voice just cracks.

The Fray - How to save a life
(mainly because the video is the saddest thing ever - everybody in it was told to think about a person that they loved who had died)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmFi2snLr7o

A few weeks ago, my class had to go to an anti-smoking drama presentation and they played that song. Again. And again. It was kind of awful, but luckily I was in the back row.

But then again, I could just be saying that to annoy people...

A little neo-classical violin and harp piece called Ashokan's Farewell. Fellow Americans may recognise it as the theme music to PBS's classic miniseries documentary on the US Civil War. If not from that you've probably heard is elsewhere. It's one of those numbers that everyone seems to recognise but no one knows the name of.

If you aren't American, you've probably never heard it, but I strongly recommend it. It is, in my opinion, the most bittersweet music. Ever.

The Blood Donor, for very personal reasons.
A beautiful, haunting piece.

Bright Eyes - Lover I Don't Have to Love

Amy in the White Coat by Bright Eyes is a lot more depressing I feel. I've never got teary over Lover I Don't Have to Love. But I shall certainly listen more intently next time :)

If you actually listen to any of these, the following may ease you back into a good mood:
Feist -- Mushaboom
Bright Eyes -- Bowl of Oranges

These two songs are awesome. You heard Oberst's cover of Feist on the Motion Sickness album? It's brilliant. Well considering he's not the most gifted singer :p

My votes for teary tracks however are

Lua - Bright Eyes
The Biggest Lie- Elliott Smith
What Sarah Said - Death Cab for Cutie
How To Save A Life - The Fray (damn you Scrubs!)

"Lea Halalela" - Keswa and Lebo M
"Believe" - Yellowcard
"Fields of Gold" - Eva Cassidy

I second "The Blood Donor" - very powerful.

I should also nominate

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - The Love I'm searching for (It's a cover of a song by The Rentals)

Karen O's vocals are so good and she genuinely sounds hurt to sing them (and if you watch the Maps video, she looks like she's about to cry)

I'm also hoping to speak for most people where when I say

Johnny Cash - Hurt

Tsk. The series has run on BBC2 on at least two occasions, it is, unquestionably, the finest historical documentary ever made - and I love Ashokan Farewell, though I am far more used to hearing it on violin and guitar, or two violins than on violin and harp. The version with Sullivan Ballou's letter to his wife, is impossible not to be moved by.
