American Flag on the Sinner

Postby UanarchyK on Sat Sep 06, 2008 4:42 am

I hope I'm not the only one this has plagued:

Why are there two USA flags in the background image of The Sinner? It's something that I've found odd since the day I first found out about this place.

They even have the right number of stripes and everything. What's up with that?

Is Oli secretly an American operative who sends cleverly coded messages to CIA HQ via his posts?

Probably a coincidence.

There also aren't enogugh stripes in the flag to strictly qualify as "American" (6 in the background vs. 13 in the American flag, though if you count the stripes and spaces, the bg does also equal 13).

Also, Oli didn't make this. He may be the current caretaker, but TheSinner existed long before Oli came here....

I adblock the background, otherwise it constantly makes me think my screen is dirty. Which it usually is.

Huh? The 13 on the US flag is the total of red and white, the white would be the spaces, surely? There's not 13 red stripes.

Haha, no, there isn't an American flag (or any other for that matter) in the background. It's simply an abstract design.
And I'm not an American operative.

I'm not just the caretaker of the site - I own it.
I came up with the current theme, including the background, and yes, it does make your monitor look like it needs cleaning. And yes, it probably does.

It does seem to look vaguely similar, but I'd never noticed it or thought of it as an American flag before now. I originally always thought the background was just a solid colour, and that my monitor was dirty, until I realised that it was actually The Sinner that was dirty. ;)

I block the background image. It makes the site scroll smoothly instead of crunchingly stutteringly slowly.

You only see it if your monitor brightness doesn't work properly anyway

So what you're saying, oli, is that this is nothing to do with you and simply just another example of America muscling in on anything and everything ;-)

I have opened the page in three different browsers and I can't see the American flag, or anything that looks like it! Even in that picture above, I can't see anything at the arrow. Is this a massive wind up? Is it perhaps a colour that a colourblind person could differentiate from the background?

[hr]

"The entirety of these definitions lie outside the gamut of the sRGB color space — such a pure color cannot be represented using RGB primaries. The color swatch to the right is a desaturated approximation, created by taking the centroid of the standard definition and moving it towards the D65 white point, until it meets the sRGB gamut triangle."

There are a few lines, that someone has interpreted as the American Flag.

It's very faint, and not actually worth bothering about.

If you fiddle with the brightness and contrast a bit, it's a bit easier to notice it:
