List your all time top 5 favourite computer/video games

Postby Nico Belic on Mon Feb 02, 2009 12:35 am

This can be from any console.

And if there's too many, you can always list more.

I'll start, my top five:
1. GTA San Andreas
2. Resident Evil 4
3. GTA 3
4. God of War series
5. Half-Life series

NB. Got no next gen consoles yet which might explain why they're all dated!

1) The Sims 2 - say goodbye to any notion of some silly "work ethic" you ever had before!
2) Call Of Duty 4
3) Gran Turismo 3
4) Mario Kart DS
5) Wii Sports - comes with the console but hours and hours and hours of fun!
But then again, I could just be saying that to annoy people...

Couldn't stick to 5! No particular order, games that I have been obsessed with at some point:

The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1)
Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
GoldenEye (N64)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (360)
Super Mario Brothers 1 (NES)
Columns (Master System)
Tetris (Gameboy, DS)
Metroid (Gameboy)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System)
F29 Retaliator (DOS)
Discworld (DOS)
Companions of Xanth (DOS)
The GTA series (PS1, PS2, 360)
Half Life series & Portal (PC, 360)
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PS1)
Lemmings (DOS)
FF7 (PS1)
Worms (PS1)
Psychonauts (Xbox)
Halo 2 (Xbox)

Argh, I could go on and on and on!

#1 Final Fantasy 7
#2 Final Fanstay 9 (I know it's maybe not the best story-wise but i just loved Zidane, it was a nice change after Cloud and Squall)
#3 Kingdom Hearts
#4 Metal Gear Solid (i do occasionally play games that aren't JRPGs ;))
#5 Okami

Plus the old Sonic and Mario games - used to love them back when the Sega Mega Drive, the SNES and the Gameboy were the in-things.

Pick 5 and then add the but i hate to do it comments. If people list 5 it makes subsequent conversation and banter about those ones both easier and more likely.

In no particular order and without much contemplation:

1)Tetris (The original game boy version)
2)Deus Ex
3)Red Alert 2
4)Goldeneye 007
5)Quake 3

In no particular order:

1) Transport Tycoon (plus TTDPatch, OpenTTD, etc)
2) Half Life 2 series
3) Monkey Island series (the first two particularly)
4) GTA series (well, Vice City onwards mainly)
5) Age of Empires series (AoE2: The Conquerors particularly)

OK, so those are mainly series rather than original names, but they're all pretty good.

I pretty much only play games for the nostalgic value. I actually have a deep burning hatred for single-player or online computer games, as I believe they are destroying our society (except for the educational ones). But I'll keep the rest of that to myself for now.

1) Super Mario World 3 or 2 from SNES - can't decide which, generally play them together anyways
2) Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
3) Super Mario Kart (SNES or N64)
4) Sim City, although I haven't played it since I was a kid.
5) Sonic (Mega Drive)

This is so bloody hard. I think the easiest thing to do will be to list the top 5 in terms of number of hours played, I think this will be as close as it gets to favourite games.

1. Wolfenstein Enemy Territory (2:1 instead of 1 :P )
2. Hearts of Iron: Series
3. Call of Duty and Medal of Honour series (I cheated to get two here)
4. Civilisation Revolution (I was ranked 12th in the world in august)
5. Orange Box (had to get portal in here too! Mind you, the multipayer is crap.)

Other than the five above there are some others that require a mention.

FF7 - Very good game - doesn't get onto the list because I didn't feel it had too much replayability, so I only completed it twice.

GTA Series - San Andreas wins. How come 4 has such a shit and non-progressive storyline?

Assassin's Creed - Minigames are a bit repetitive, but the storyline is amazing and it's probably the most graphically stunning game I have ever played. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Fallout 3 - A modern FPS RPG without regenerative health!

Sid Meier - Just the man, what a legend. (AC, Pirates, Civ, etc. etc)

Frontlines: Fuel of War - Very good storyline, and although the multiplayer gameplay is crap and buggy it's really addictive for some reason.

Any real-time pausable WWII tactical game. As you can see from HoI, I prefer world wide strategy games though.
I'm not a large water-dwelling mammal Where did you get that preposterous hypothesis? Did Steve

Rather than 5 in total, easier to pick 5 by computer (I've never owned a console... if it doesn't have a keyboard or can't be programmed, I'm not interested)

Spectrum
1) Elite
2) Jet Set Willy
3) Underwurlde
4) Beach Head
5) Raid Over Moscow

Amiga
1) Lemmings series
2) The Settlers
3) Fighter Bomber
4) F16:Falcon
5) Stunt Car Racer

PC
1) Quakeworld (Online version of Quake 1 - original and best)
2) Age of Empires series
3) Command & Conquer series
4) Battlefield 2
5) World of Warcraft

Which misses out Lemmings (PC) and Worms Armageddon... which would be almost criminal not to include. It almost certainly misses out lots of others... lost in the mists of time. Oh! Tir Na Nog on the spectrum was great. As was... I'll stop there.

Hmm, mostly PC games, but one old N64...

1. Goldeneye
2. Age of Empires II
3. Medieval Total War
4. Civilization II (addicted to the scenarios)
5. Combat Flight Simulator, The Skies over Europe

I would put classics like Sim City and Outpost II on the list, but I haven't played either of them in a decade. Another classic, but one I do still play, is Robert E. Lee, Civil War General.

People who are including (X) Series in their lists are blat cheats.

1)Mario series
2)Command And Conquer Series
3)Final Fantasy Series
4)Zelda Series
5)Civilisation Series.

Thats cheap and dodges the whole pick 5 aspect. If you've got a favourite game from a series, pick that one, if you like more than one enough, list them.

1. Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
2. Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
3. Fallout 2 (PC)
4. Half Life (PC)
5. Silent Hill (PS1)

Also been playing the (originally )indy game Mount & Blade a lot recently, is good fun but gets repetitive after a while.

I notice this comes out during the 3 weeks or so the undergrads have off between exams and the new term! Ah brings back memories. I'm going to limit them to PC ones that got me through my undergrad years...

1 . Red Alert II
2. Day of Defeat (The online WWII Half Life multiplayer)
3. Rome: Total War
4. GTA III San Andreas
5. Sim City 3000
Arg. 5 and a half. Age of Empires II
...5 & 3/4 Homeworld

So 5 isn't enough!

After a modicum of thought, I would have to go for:

Sonic 2 (Mega Drive) - aah, childhood...
Sim Farm (PC) - complete with accurate booklet on planting/harvesting crops (!)
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Xbox) - because the Prince rules!
Quake III Arena (Dreamcast) - such ridiculous characters, esp. the jumping eyeball and the woman with clouds for feet.
Fable (Xbox) - for pure comedy value! "Deathbringer, why'd they call you that?"

- LoZ: Wind Waker
- Chrono Trigger
- Star Controll II (The Ur-quan Masters)
- Counter Strike (1.6 AND Source)
- The New Tetris (N64)

It's hard to pick just five! So many great games like StarCraft, Perfect Dark, Prey, the SNES Mario Kart, Nights into Dreams...

1) Tetris (either Gameboy or PC) - sheer playability.
2) Silent Hill 2 (PS2) - The first console game on which I got totally hooked
3) God of War (PS2) - Learning curve, playability and variety of weapons/moves.
4) Climber (Handheld unit) - the first game I remember playing. Simple LCD handheld, like Donkey Kong.
5) Goldeneye (N64) - the only reason they made the N64. Great for hours of multi-user shootemups!

Also ran:
a) Guitar Hero (multi platform)
b) Duck Hunt (NES)
c) Bishi Bashi Special (PSX) - utter nonsense, but so playable. And no-one understands what's going on.
d) Chuckie Egg (ZX Spectrum+)
e) Silent Hill 3 and 4 - still very disturbing, but they don't have the same pull as SH2 (Never played SH1)
