What do you put on the barbecue?

Postby eagle on Sun Mar 22, 2009 3:09 pm

I've been hearing lots of talk about barbecues over the weekend, with some interesting concoctions:
  • swordfish with lime and balsamic vinegar marinade,
  • pork ribs in soy sauce and honey,
  • asparagus, onion, sweet potato and red pepper kebabs

What do you put on the barbecue? I'm assuming that we'll all include burgers and sausages, so unless these are banned from your barbecue, shall we take that as read?

Charcoal.
...then again, that is only my opinion.

Sorry - once I'd thought it I couldn't help myself. Bananas and chocolate in tinfoil are really quite nice. I do enjoy a good steak too, preferably marinanded in black pepper, olive oil and BBQ sauce, or salmon steak coated with black pepper and lemon juice.

While in the US, I was staying with a guy who cooked us "beer can chicken" - a chicken, cooked on a barbeque, with half a can of beer placed inside the chicken. Results in a really moist chicken, very nice indeed. Not something to cook if you're in a hurry, though, but it's worth the wait!

A quick Google reveals several recipies, such as this one.

Lizzie_Liz - Sweet chilli and irn bru? Sounds weird, but I could see how the sugar would caramelise on the barbecue and be quite tasty.

Gubbins - to be fair, if it's windy, most barbecued food ends up with a bit of charcoal on it...

Duggeh - although it sounds disgusting at first, I think I could actually quite warm to marinaded spam.

Random Musings and Stripedtights - You are most welcome at my next barbecue if you can bring those!

(The mention of salmon reminds me of a recipe I heard involving a foil-wrap salmon with seasonings, placed inside a dishwasher for the full wash cycle. As it's sealed, there's no contamination either way, and no wasted electricity - and as an added bonus, your plates are clean just as your dinner's ready!)

Eagle: I love a good barbeque - just name the time and place :P

Actually, anyone think we should have a 'Sinner' barbeque somewhere/sometime? I'm very hungry now.

Were this Facebook (or b3ta), I'd click the "I like this" button right about now.

There used to be "Sinner Dinners" and other such things, back in ye olden days. Now that the days are getting longer and the weather getting nicer, a Sinner BBQ might be a nice idea indeed.

I'd gladly host a Sinner Dinner/ BBQ!

And with enough requests, I'll provide more Irn Bru Sweet Chilli burgers (or sausages if I'm prepared enough to get the hog casings ready in time). Or I might go for another recipe - I'm always willing to try new things.

Perhaps we can aim for a fortnight from now? At the BBQ, do we mention our Sinner names as well as our real names, or do we just stick to real names, and let everyone guess?

Depending on how many people want to come, I'm not sure I can afford to feed everyone, but a formula that worked at previous Sinner Dinners was for me to provide loads of food and some drink, then everyone chip in £3 or £4, and bring more booze as they saw fit. How does that sound?
