Rally and general assembly against the coming cuts

Hey St Andrews, i found something for you to do on Tuesday 30th:

Rally outside the library at 12 noon, against self-imposed austerity, gentrification and the coalition's cuts.

We will have a short General Assembly to decide the direction that the rest of the day takes, as well as some important themes of an anticuts campaign.

Cuts have not even been announced yet, and still the management of this University have so internalised market ideology that they tried to make redundant four members of staff. They also claim to want to exclude poorer students from applying, effectively increasing the class divide that already separates St Andrews from the majority of the world. All fo this is happening to the backdrop of Management occupying the Art History department, forcing them to relocate, and refurbishing at great cost to the staff and students of this university.

Whether you're a worker, claimant or student the coming cuts are going to hurt us all. Demand staff and student consultation on any future cuts or fee increases!

Uhm, whilst I approve of your purposes... I very much disapprove of the date. Do this year's graduates really deserve to have their day overpowered by politics?

November 30th, Graduation Day.

Or will you all whisper and stay away from the quad?

I just received an invite to this, despite being in London, but I thought I'd come on the Sinner anyway and show my support for your noble cause.

Reading through quickly I notice a "Merlin" and a "Tallulah" are organising it. No problem, I'm open minded, I could hold hands with a Merlin or a Tallulah in solidarity against the fascist police....wait a second, the only person with any listed political views is called Rasim and it says he's into the overthrow of the state and "ska" (music, at least I hope). Oh no wait, there's a socialist. Can't have a good demo without someone shouting about Marx now can we?

So there's going to be a "general assembly" presumably in the courtyard of the library, which promises to be a disaster if the weather even threatens snow. Even the bbc says it's hit an go with an average temperature of 0 degrees. Oh look, just in case I'm too cold to think of one, you've provided a handy chant

I'm reading the wall for solidarity with my fellow occupators, there's a girl here who writes "like" before everything, is it possible she is putting an unnecessary word there because that's how, like, she speaks in real life ya?

I'm sorry but between holding hands with Merlin, your obvious lack of political views besides those of the attention-seeking variety, the f**king baltic weather and some of the transparently annoying traits of those attending I rather think I shall give it a miss old chap. I do hope you aren't numerous enough to require a copper leave his comfortable warm police station and hang around babysitting you with daggers in his eyes, perhaps he might "kettle" you so you can complain about something some more.

make redundant
class divide
Management
Whether you're a worker, claimant

Having just endured 24 hours of tube strike courtesy of one Mr Bob Crowe Esq to prevent redundancies, preserve the class divide (that's how he makes a living), challenge management in the name of the workers I can say I'm sick of hearing this particular kind of rhetoric. Been listening to too many Billy Bragg songs and reading the New Statesman have we? Rather than talk about it, or you know, vote on it next time round you'd much rather your name was associated with valiant but doomed cause. Very poetic.

Hennessy,

Since I actually know Merlin (he's my academic father) I'll point out that you really don't know anything about him and that his political views are very much genuine. It's easy to be snarky on the internet, but you could try being a little politer when referring to people by name who you don't even know?

I should note I'm no particular fan of action on Graduation day but unfortunately today was the next big day of action across the UK.

I'm sorry. Maybe I got a little carried away there naming people. He is on the organising committee however, I'm assuming therefore he wants his name to be associated with this little shin-dig, even if it is from a detractor. Having such an interesting name means one can often be remembered quickly by someone who wishes to criticise the actions of your organisation.

Puts the attention seeking opposition to the cuts into a little more context:

Macgamer, why do you share such drivel? Why do you read such drivel?

By sharing links from a bad thinker, all you're doing is advertising that you, too, are a bad thinker.

They didn't compare themselves to starving Africans. I paid attention to the lyrics. It's a copy of a song about starving Africans, but that in no way says that they're comparing the life of a student to that of a starving African. Unless you (and Guido) also believe that the Red Flag song is comparing Socialism with German christmas trees?

Wow. Naming people by real name and criticising them precisely because of their name, how nice.

This thread has been mentioned to me a few times by people in pubs, classes, etc. the last few days, because I made the mistake of telling people that once a month or so I lurk on The Sinner (a fact that many people have made fun of me for since). None of these comments - coming from people with very different political backgrounds, from supporting the anti-cut rally to not caring, to actively thinking it was a stupid idea - were positives.

For a website that everyone always looks down on anyway, you're sinking lower every day. The same 10 or so (and that's being generous) conservative, misogynist assholes who post here are not only making fools of themselves, but make everyone in St Andrews embarrassed by this website. Most of you (all of you?) regular posters don't even attend here anymore - why are you ruining this site for all the current students?

Seriously, this entire post is a new low.

Hm, apparently any criticism of the sinner, and discussion of how most posters are graduated and don't speak for any current students, is not allowed, even though its what everyone around town thinks of the website. Good to know, mods.

Calm down dear. We don't sit hammering F5 on the unregistered post queue. We all have jobs.

You did a marvellous job of contradicting yourself. Well done.
