Sorry, was that the Foreign Office or the Foreign and Commonwealth Office?

Max Hastings' view was that we should have reached a diplomatic solution to the Falklands 'problem' before the war ever started (with which I disagree, as it goes) but that once the shooting started we were honour-bound to retake the Islands. He also suggests that the Argentinians may have been surprised by our tenacity and may only have intended the invasion as another weapon in the bargaining over Las Malvinas.

On the train down to my little bit of Yorkshire, I also wondered why it is we (I say we, although I rather seldom go) all go to TPs at the end of a debate? Surely somewhere nearer would be much better, simply for ease of access in view of fostering a greater sense of society.

It's sad that we meet where there aren't any good and suitably sized pubs nearby. The closest is the Byre, but even that's a trek for the uninitiated.

The saga over our hostelry of choice:
The Byre were wanky middle of last year over our drinks discount: so we ventured to the Westport.
One night in March, lured by Laura MacPherson's promise of a staff discount, a select group went to the Ardgowan.
When that was being refurbished, we all decamped to TP's, next door...plus it was close to Peter's house.
(Though I am surprised that such a potent symbol of the ancien "Old Boys stylee" regime should persist even now. Given that it was obviously such a hotbed of raging Conservatism and all the other things we are supposed to hate now...like criticism)

Still think Aikman's has a lot to recommend it, provided nothing else is going on there on Wednesday nights.

Oh it does. I have very fond memories of decanting there post-debate in days of yore. We love Malcolm and Barbara. They do need to do some updating of the place though - perhaps some more robust chairs.

Perhaps not that far. But the booths were very comfy, and the wine list was stonking.

The wine list remains more than acceptable. It's just underused, in my 'umble opinion.

Indeed. However, I stand by my comments on the seating.

The current seating does leave much to be desired. Perhaps we should link this thread to the "The Cellar Bar" thread, make our representations to Malcolm...

Perhaps, although as neither one of us is exactly a local any more, perhaps not.

Incidentally, pint some day? I have to come over to Edinburgh shortly anyway.

Yes, certainly. I'm away this weekend but back on Monday, so any time next week, really. I'll have finished marking exams by then, as well. Bloody undergraduates...

Surely use of the internet is that bit more high-tech than a telephone? Plus, have you not heard of a discussion thread?

Does this mean the general public are invited to said pint?

Depends a) if the general public can find it, and b) if the general public is paying.

No. It means they're welcome to join the discussion. No invitation express or implied was issued.
