SSDC pro-am, conference and Bogwall

Postby Connie on Wed Oct 11, 2006 9:34 am

Hello all. Time for an update about the goings on with the Scottish Students Debating Council I think.

There is going to be a pro-am tournament in Glasgow on Saturday 21st October. Its going to be a good laugh, party at the GUU after, and crash in their debate chamber probably. We need pros AND ams, so anyone interested email me.
The next day is the SSDC conference. There is a meeting of the SSDC, then a day of prep for Worlds, although not exclusively for people who are going to worlds. Anyone at the pro-am is welcome to come. The announcement for the 1st round of the Mace will also be that day.

The Mace then - I have applied to have 6 teams. I reckon if any institution deserves the extra space its us (but I'm biased I guess). If people want to enter the Mace, which is a year long, long-prep knockout tournament then speak to me at training today or next week. We'll announce teams next week.

Newcastle and Durham IVs and on Friday the 3rd and 4th of November. if you want to go, then see me at training or after LPH tonight.

Bogwall. Contrary to rumours I have heard, Bogwall is not until the 18th of November. It is in Durham. New people - we will start thinking about teams in a few weeks, just try to keep the date free. Old people - we need to take at least a couple of judges along. I'll be going. if you want to join me, just let me know so I can give Durham a rough idea of how big the gang will be.

As always, any questions, email me on cbg2

Given that the generally-accepted definition of 'professional' is one whose income is derived primarily from the activity concerned (or possibly through sponsorship procured as a direct result of it), do I take it that the Pro contingent is to be derived entirely from the staff of the ESU?

No David, I think you will find that term comes from the world of sports other than debating which involve actual physical exorcise. For instance the 'Dunhill' is a 'Pro-Am' tournament. It is a term that most will understand, which is used to explain the fact that an expirienced debator will speak with an inexpirienced one.

What are you up to these days? I know that facebook is the place for this sort of thing but while I'm here I thougt I would ask.

Sport or otherwise it has nothing to do with experience it means professional and amateur. That a professional will likely have more experience is true, but not necessarily the case. I'd be willing to bet that a newly pro golf player has a helluva lot less experience than the amateur Jimmy Tarbuck does. The term carries past golf as well, into all sports where there are professional and amateur status that determine which competitions one can compete in. Honestly.

Aye, that's what I thought.

Ohhmy: I'm in Manchester right now, working for the Co-operative Group on their graduate training programme. Didn't I tell you all this at the Societies' Fair? No matter - hope you're having a good evening.

Ok, so heres the deal with transport

We should be in Glasgow as early as possible on Saturday, so we need to get the first X24 from the bus staion at 8.25. Sorry guys, but if you want to do IVs, you better get used to it.

Getting back is a bit harder. the last direct bus leaves at 6.15. if you're desperate then the trains run to Dundee til 9.50 or something, but I'd advise people to stay, watch (or take part in) the final, sleep at the GUU with the rest of us then get the bus in the morning at 11.25.

After the conference we WILL be getting the bus home at 7.25. This is the second last bus. I AM NOT MISSING THE LAST DIRECT BUS LIKE WE DID LAST YEAR.

Does anyone have any questions? if your name is not on that list then pleeeeeease email me asap cos they need to know numbers.

Just one thing you should bear in mind - although the second last bus may well leave at 7.25, the subway back into the City Centre from Hillhead will have stopped at 6 p.m., it being Sunday.

Newcastle and Durham

Postby Connie on Wed Oct 18, 2006 9:05 am

Neither are pro-ams, but we are using Newcastle as a chance for less experienced speakers to speak with members of the Worlds teams. Team pairings will be arranged at training.

Durham will see us revert back to Worlds teams, although there will be a space or two for less experienced teams. New speakers who spoke with a worlds speaker at Newcastle are encouraged to judge at Durham.

Pro-Am Success!

Postby kdc4 on Tue Oct 24, 2006 9:01 am

Due ot the nature of the pro-am, with professionals debating with amateurs from other institutions, we were unable to have an all-St. Andrews final (as I'm sure we would have, if given the opportunity).

Thus, we were forced to do the next best thing and ensure that all finalling teams had a St. Andrews member.

Tom, Alice, Tony, and myself all made it to the finals while Tony topped the individuals tab, the team tab, and piloted his team to eventual victory.

Well done all!

Tab to follow.

Cheers,
-Doug

Motions:

THW Legalize all drugs
THW Sacrifice economic growth for environmental good
THW Stop funding faith-based schools (exact wording escapes me).
THW Remove drug patents for the 3rd world.

Final: THW would restrict adoption to the parents' home country.

Truly an impressive result, especially the freshers. Alice made the final and Miles ended up beating his 'pro' partner on tab.

Largest Gap between PRO/AM teammates:
52 Points, achieved by Jason Vit who debated with an ESL speaker from Robert Gordon's.

Judges was based on SSDC gradings, for speakers it was more "self-definitional"

Bogwall= This Saturday. All interested should definitely come to training on Wed. and Friday (if possible) and make sure Connie is aware of your interest.

Also, you can catch Connie Monday night half seven at the Mansfield lounge, where we're in the Mace.

Cheers,
-Doug

P.S. Well done to Tom and Miles, who have also advanced to the second round of the Mace.

Congratulations to Doug and Connie for advancing to the next round of the Mace!

In regards to Bogwall, I've done some looking at trains.

On the Sunday, the earliest train is at 9.50am getting into Leuchars at 2.15pm. I think that considering it's Raisin Weekend, we're probably going to want to get back as soon as possible for all the parties.

Going down on the Saturday, however, we have a few options. Registration closes at 12.15, so we can take the:
7.46 getting in at 10.51
8.12 getting in at 11.21
8.44 getting in at 11.42

Any thoughts?

I vote for the middle train. Then if anyone misses it (which they WONT) they can still make it.

Having looked at the train websites as well it is now too late to get cheap tickets in advance , certainly if like me you want to get home that night (anyone else wanting to join us is welcome)
A saver return costs about £37 with a railcard (if you dont have one already, getting one pays for itself practically with this one ticket)
