Maidens 2006

Postby Alex Jennings on Thu Oct 12, 2006 7:47 pm

All right, since the Sinner crashed and I lost my original thread, here's the updated Maidens announcement.

Maidens is happening this Sunday (15 October) in the Union. Registration will be on the top floor (look for signs) from 10am - 10.30. Rounds will be beginning at 11am. Drag yourself out of bed and pour coffee down your throat and you'll be fine. If you're interested in having a chance at debating even if you have no experience, by all means come along.

The format as it always is: 3-a-side Individuals Format, just like it is in LPH or in the Balaka competition. There will be three rounds, a semi-final and then the formal final that evening in LPH, followed by the Maidens dinner. The dinner is (as always) at the Jahangir restaurant and the standard meal (two courses, half bottle of wine) for £15.

Any questions regarding the competition can be directed to me at and reservations for the Maidens dinner can be given to Jaz at .

Cheers!

Well, a preview until I get the tab to post...

The FInal Motion was: TH Would Ban Overly Skinny Models from the Catwalk and Print Ads.

2nd Place Winner of Maidens 2006:
Katie Meyer (3rd Opp)

1st Place Winner of Maidens 2006:
Frank DiTraglia (1st Opp)

Well, that's me done for the moment. I will post the tab as soon as it ends up on my computer.

Thanks to all the competitors, judges and all those who provided me with some sort of sane input throughout the day.

Now it's time for some well deserved sleep I feel.

Quoting Alex Jennings from 01:44, 16th Oct 2006TH Would Ban Overly Skinny Models from the Catwalk and Print Ads.

TH Would Ban Overly Skinny Models from Print Ads and the Catwalk.

or

TH Would Ban Overly Skinny Models from the Catwalk and from Print Ads

Otherwise print reads as a verb and as an alternative to catwalks. Tut.

Even though my grammar was incorrect it didn't impact on the debate luckily!

So here is the tab as well as the motions used throughout the day.

Round One: THW Ban Public Sector Employees from Wearing the Veil.
Round Two: THW Compel All Porn Stars to Wear Condoms on Screen.
Round Three: TH Calls for the Immediate Withdrawal of Forces from Iraq.

THE TAB

2. Miles Wood 289
3. Frank DiTraglia 288

24. Dummy 2 (Tom C.) 205

Just a note about the tie for sixth place: We ran the fourth round as a full round instead of a semi just because there were so many speakers so close to each other and in contention for the break we thought that was most fair. Unfortunately there was a tie for the final spot in the final. There is never an easy or clear way to ever determine which speaker should go to the final (I've seen it done many different ways), but looking at the individual scores, James Boulter scored 3 out of 4 rounds above 70, and therefore we decided that showed a slightly higher level of consistency in going into the final.

At any rate, there is the tab. Any questions or requests for individual rankings for each round can be directed to me at .

Congratulations to all speakers on a fine performance and to Alex for a well-managed tournament.

Certainly, the quality of speaking this year was far higher than when I entered Maidens some years back; performances that might have warranted a spot in the final in previous years only afforded a middle-tab position in what turned out to be a fiercely competitive contest.

Wednesday trainings will now be focused on team debating, in preparation for the Pro-Am and Bogwall.

Cheers,
-Doug

I have to agree with Doug, the standard has increased considerably since my time (and Dougs year was much better than mine too!)
After all, nobody mentioned dinosaurs, or sang Jerusalem this year.
Well done to all, and I hope as many as possible stick with it as there is the potential for a lot of good iv debaters there.
