Intervarsity Success!

Postby kdc4 on Sun Dec 03, 2006 12:35 pm

St. Andrews pursued a policy of 'divide and conquer' this weekend, by sending Worlds teams A and C to Cork whilst sending another five teams to Lancaster.

Lancaster saw Chris top the speaker tab, Chris and Beth breaking first on the team tab, and Tom and Lauren second on the team tab. Both teams advanced to the final, which was eventually won by the University of Western England (for which I expect to hear a VERY good explanation from our finalists)!

After missing the Invitational Break by one place, Tony and Jason joined Doug and Connie for the main intervarsity tournament at Cork.

Connie led the charge for St. Andrews B, averaging 82 speaker points per room and keeping the team in the top room for all five rounds. She finished joint fifth on the speaker tab, above Will Jones, James Dray, and Bob Nimmo.

Doug and Connie eventually finished second on the team tab, their best performance yet. They crashed in the semifinals, continuing their streak of unsuccessful 1st Propositions.

Tony and Jason, after a slow start, managed to claw their way back to 5th overall on the tab and took their semifinal round by storm from 1st Opposition. Speaking in 2nd Opposition in the final, a 7-2 vote named them the winners on the motion:

THW: Legalize Prostitution.

Their victory is the first of the year for St. Andrews and St. Andrews' first Irish victory, ever.

Well done to all our teams!

Cheers,
-Doug

Well done to the Cork teams for a fantastic performance! Sorry for not winning the final, a full explanation, including the special nature of some of the motions and judging and Lancaster shall be forthcoming shortly.

In the meantime, the Lancaster motions were as follows:

1. THB that cartoons reflect the slipping standards of society (unless you were lucky enough to have Strathclyde A squirrel it as "THW make divorce illegal")
2. THB that a single parent family unit is better thean a traditional family of strife. (which allowed Strathclyde A, again in first prop, to run the exact same case)
3. THB that mentally disabled people are treated with the same disdain as sex offenders.
4. THB that Borat is promoting anti-Semitism.

And the motion for the final:
THB that spies are glorified thieves.

Those are spectacularly special motions.

Yes, dreamt up by special people!
I've never been a big fan of any motion that starts "THB" anyway.

Big well done to all of the IV teams - that's an awesome result.

Wow, that's quite awful.

Cork was slightly more sane:

1. THW: Reintroduce Hard Labour in Prisons
2. THW: Give artists a percentage of the resale of their work.
3. THW: Force soccer/football teams to have a certain number of home-grown players.
4. THW: Hold drug dealers accountable for the crimes of their customers.
5. THW: Ban mercenaries

Semi: THW: End the War on Drugs in South America.

Final: THW: Legalize Prostitution.

The motions where made more awful when their IV Sec got up and said that they where "partially open." How the hell you have a "partially open" motion I dont know. Furthermore some of the judging was seriously dodgy. Fortunatly the last one before the break enabled me to do a half of my speach doing a Borat impression, which was great fun.

I suspect they were meaning 'semi open', in which the motion tells speakers the topic intended for debate, but not necessarily the details thereof.
Example: This house would sacrifice liberty for security

Hmm. I don't like motions to be open in any way, shape or form. As far as I am concerned, it generally makes for bad debates.

Doug, please, please, please tell me that there was some sort of composite team not made up solely of St Andrews students which might in some way almost justify the use of St Andrew's A or B?

The St Andrews A, B, C etc is my job, so please don't moan to Doug about it.
Whats the problem?

If you don't know the problem I'm complaining about - how can you leap to Doug's defence over it?

Are you responsible for his misplaced apostrophes? Or just conditioned to take any post on here as a personal attack?

Was the team point scoring different than usual? St Andrews E got a third, a first, and a third in the first three rounds, yet we only have four points. I calculate five using the regular 3-2-1-0 system. I also think we got a second or third in the fourth round. Then again, the judging was pretty special. And those motions.

Sorry, I didn't realise you were merely complaining about the use of punctuation. Although, I do think that on a post about successes of our teams this weekend, it is rather petty to do this.
Lets keep threads like this for comments about the good weekend we all just had please.

Or not. I wasn't being "petty" or moaning to anyone, I was asking a simple question about something posted on this thread. Surely, that's reasonable, or are you actually going to suggest I should have started another thread?

Though it does relate to the weekend - if we enter teams as St Andrew's whatever, it makes us look very stupid.
