Courier Second Round

Postby Sally on Fri Dec 08, 2006 10:32 am

Thank you to the 28 people who chaired, judged, sergeanted or dummied in the first round of the Courier (unfortunately that includes Tom!). Particular thanks has to go to Doug, for dummy speaking in four of the rounds, and other people who went to rounds at the last minute, Alex, Laura, Daniel, Miles, Lauren and anyone else who I've forgotten but you know who you are.

The draw for the second round has been released, and debates are taking place on the following dates, all of which are during exams or semester break:
Tuesday 16th January
Wednesday 17th January
Thursday 18th January
Tuesday 23rd January
Wednesday 24th January
Thursday 25th January (bear in mind TCD IV begins on Friday)

The motions are all fun and IR related.

If you would like to go to any of the second rounds please EMAIL me on svy by TUESDAY NIGHT. Please let me know which of the debates you can go to, and I'll try to find you a round to go to. People are needed to chair, sergeant and judge. There is a deadline because I would like to know who is going to these debates before Christmas, as my exams are still going on when the second round starts in January.

Other dates for your diary:
13th January: The Courier/ICYD training day is being held in St Andrews from 10.30-5. If anyone is free of exams that day and would like to help, please include this on your email.
20th January: ICYD. This is the St Andrews round of the International Competition for Young Debaters, and loads of judges are needed. It's being held in Dundee. If you are here on that day and are able to go, please email me.

Thanks
Sally

Yeah, but if I describe them as evil IR motions (as if you'd set nasty motions...) I'll probably end up having to go to more rounds.

the motions may be IR related, but they are definitely not fun.

Although, it will prompt many young people to work out what 'outsourcing' means.

Trust me, they'll be more fun than the common fisheries policy...

The CAP debate! I seem to remember Connie writing me a floor speech in case I needed to read it out...

Anyway, if anyone actually reads the sinner and still wants to go to one of the second round debates email me BY THIS EVENING. Unfortunately I already have enough people for the first week (still let me know when you are free in case anyone drops out), but if anyone volunteers for the second week you probably will get to go.

Thanks. I'll email the people who have already emailed back later in the week to let you know whats happening.

Ah...there was nothing quite as bad as 'THW just wants to be rich' back in my 2nd year. 12 speakers. One argument per side. V. simple debate, though:

Prop: If you're rich, you might donate to charities and Good Things

Opp: Not all rich people do that...

Prop: Ah, but they might

Opp: But they might not

and on and on and on.

Ahem, whose idea was it to make the kiddles debate CFP?

Just because something is 'more fun' does not make it fun in an absolute sense.

Yes, and it was the best quality debate of the first round!

(apart from the bit when opp started going off down the argument that poor people would become dirty poor people under prop's model...)

That's a great argument right there - exactly the opp line I would go with as well.

Got to say I thought the final speaker was fantastic - he had me in stitches!
