Just a quick hi to say we're all in Vancouver. We'll keep you all updated, debating starts tomorrow.
And to let y'all know, Botswanna are challenging Cork's bid to host in 2009. We'll know how that goes on 1st January.

You know that all I want is blood preferably from Hart House (preferably served up in the final). If any of you manage to make a Texan judge cry I will also be very very proud. If you could video tape it that would be even better.

Good Luck for the New YEAR.

WORLDS: DAY 1

Postby kdc4 on Sat Dec 30, 2006 5:55 am

St. Andrews are off to a flying start after three rounds (of nine):

Team A: Connie and Doug
Team B: Rach and Chris
Team C: Tony and Jason

Round 1: THW: Remove all state funding for religious schools.

St. Andrews A: 3rd Place- 1st Opp(don't ask)
St. Andrews B: 1st Place- 1st Opp
St. Andrews C: 1st Place- 1st Opp

Round 2: THW: Abolish the UK's Nuclear Arsenal (!)

St. Andrews A: 1st Place- 1st Prop
St. Andrews B: 2nd Place- 2nd Opp
St. Andrews C: 1st Place- 1st Prop

Round 3: THW: Accelerate land redistribution in South Africa.

St. Andrews A: 1st Place- 2nd Opp
St. Andrews B: 2nd Place- 2nd Prop
St. Andrews C: 3rd Place- 1st Opp

ALL teams currently on seven points, an excellent start!

Other Scotland:
Aberdeen (Murray and Reid): 7 points
GUU B (Adams and Brown): 6 points
GUU A (Armstrong and Hardman): 5 points

Jess and Rebecca are getting good judging assignments and good feeback, which bodes well. Rebecca has been recommended as a potential chair judge by all three of her chairs.

Also, Jason and Doug randomly signed up for a 'public speaking contest'. Two-thirds of all speakers have been knocked out, but Jason and Doug are both still in the contest.

Happy New Year to all!

Cheers,
-Doug

Those who want to see the full break can look at the blog.

Connie and Doug became the first St. Andrews team to break since 1989 (I think), by scraping 32nd place of 32 breaking teams.
They are scheduled to hit Oxford A, B, and D in their octo round. Ouch.

Backtabbing suggests that St. Andrews B and C came within an ace of making the break, themselves, with St. Andrews B glorying in the fact that they knocked Fred Cowell out of the break on their way back from nine points.

Jess broke as a judge, joining a contingent of breaking Scottish judges that included Jenni Harrison and Kirsty Russell.

Jess's achievement is particularly impressive as it comes in her second year, in a judging pool loaded with old veterans and Worlds finalists.

Doug also broke to the public speech final, though everyone (Doug included) is trying unsuccessfully to care about that!

In short, a successful Worlds performance for St. Andrews. Tab should be released on the third.

Cheers,
-Doug

Success from Vancouver!

Big, huge, amazing round of applause for

St Andrews A - Connie and Doug...

...who broke 32!!! Just so everyone knows, Doug gave up hope on the break and went to bed before the announcement, Connie went upstairs to find him, knocked on the door, said,
'Doug, I just think you should know that you broke in public speaking' (because he did)
To which Doug responded, 'That's why you woke me up?'
And Connie added,'Yeah I thought I'd tell you that you broke in public speaking because we only broke 32nd ON TAB!!!!' Doug's double take was priceless.

Other Scottish successes:
Breaking judges-
Jenni Harrison, Jessica Siegel

Independent judge Kirsty Russell

Much love, cross your fingers for Octos!

PS Just so everyone knows, James Dray and Will Jones broke first. We think this is good and happy.

Happy New Year!

Just heard about the break, and its brilliant! I'm sure I speak for pretty much everyone in Aberdeen in saying congrats to Doug, Connie and Jess, as well as Kizzy and Jenni on making the break in what looks to have been a really tough competition.

Wishing you guys the best of luck!

Happy New Year!

Huge Congrats to Connie and Doug for representing St Andrews and Scotland so well. Also to Jess, Jenni and Kizzy, for keeping up the tradition of excellence in judging...

It's great to see that your training programme over the last couple of years is really bearing fruit. St Andrews has set the example for others to follow in terms of training and selection.

Good luck in what looks like the Octo of death! Will have my fingers crossed for you (even though you're taking on my alma mater)...

Also, commiserations to the teams who just missed out, but you have the consolation of having performed very well at what looks like a very competitive worlds....

Enjoy the rest of the tournament

St A made it through their octo, in the room of Oxford hell. Jess and I judged the same octo (the one with Cambridge, Durham, Stanford and George Washington). I judged a further quarter (which is being announced later tonight - it had 3 Sydney teams plus another Oxford team) and Jenni was on the list to do an ESL semi. So all considered, it's been a successful day for Scotland.

Updates on the advancement of Doug's public speaking career later on...

So Connie and Doug got through the octo of doom, into the quarter final of doom. Knocking out Oxford A and B. And put up a pretty good fight in the quarter we hope.

If anyone is interested the rooms were

Octo
1st prop - St Andrews A
1ST opp - Oxford D (James Drey and Will Jones)
2nd prop - Oxford A (Alex Just and Patrick Delaney)
2nd opp - Oxford B (Richard Goodman and Andrew Worsnip)

Quarter
1st prop - Oxford D (James and Will)
1st opp - St Andrews A
2nd prop - UCD L&H A (Noel and Frank)
2nd opp - Queensland B

Jess was judging an octo, which was ace.

We are all waiting for the announcement about semis....

Greetings from all of us, we'll be home soon!

Go St Andrews!

Am I correct in saying that this is the best performance by a St Andrews team at Worlds, ever?
