Inter-Residence Debating Competition 2007

Postby Alex Jennings on Mon Feb 19, 2007 5:33 pm

It's that time of year again - the John Blair Shield is up for grabs again.

Melville is the current champion, so if you want to defend your hall's title or prove that there's another hall that is better, here's what you need to know.

Wednesday, 21 February we'll be holding both the preliminary rounds and the formal final in Lower Parliament Hall at 7.30pm for 8pm.

Registration is from 1-2pm. The three preliminary rounds will run from 2pm - 6pm and the top four teams will then speak in the final.

So find someone from your hall and form a team, or if you are in private accomodation you may debate with someone else also in private accomodation and get ready for a great day of debating!

If there are any questions, please e-mail me at .

Especially well done to those who were feeling particularly lightbulb-tastic!

Just a thought, but at the start of the next debate, does anyone fancy reinstating the Standing Orders, which by my reckoning, are still suspended?

The standing orders where suspended by the Speaker for the final because of the need to speak plainly about matters concerning the Royal family. This was done after several points of order had been made and it was realised that the debate would have got bogged down if the orders where not suspended. It would have been to the detriment of the debate if every time a speaker made a pertinant comment concerning Harry's drug taking, party attair, partying, red hair, general stupidity etc he/she had to stop as a point was raised. It also allowed for a much more interesting set of speaches!

When did it become the royal family that was sacrosanct? It used to just be HM the Queen...

I believe, though I may be mistaken when 'he who must not be named' attended our university.

Unfortunatly part 3.VI of the standing orders states "The Speaker will rule out of order any remarks which are ungentlemanly, or which reflect negatively upon their own conduct or upon members of the Royal Family." Therefore calling Harry a red-head or saying he has taken drugs could be ruled out of order, regardless of how true it may be.

Yes, I'm not disputing that it says that, I'm asking when it came to say that as I recall it applying only to the monarch. Perhaps now that HHSNBN has left we could change it back.

I have no idea when it was changed. It was like that when I arrived at St Andrews in 2005.

Gosh, did I make a mistake when I typed it? Be assured I shall publically apologise next time I'm in the chamber.

Is it just me, or is this getting really circular?

I'm finding it quite amazing that nobody's expressed the annoyance I felt at the suspension of the Standing Orders. I was, of course, bad mannered from thereon in, I needn't maintain good conduct.
