AGM and the new Board of Ten

Postby Dickie on Thu Mar 22, 2007 8:35 am

Could the results of the AGM be posted so that more than the 29 people there can find out who the new board are.

I would post but I would get the spellings of names wrong and I hate doing that.

Please include all votes and redistabutions.

I must say I am shocked that I received the lowest number of RON votes for an uncontested position given my policies of evensong and tyranny. Doug presumably lost out due to his comment that he looked like Iain Kennedy...

I can only say that I'm sorry the society is in such a state that so few people turned up to the AGM.

One can presume that no-one cared, or got the joke. As Steve says, gone are the days when elections actually mattered, were well attended, and fought over.
A certain person makes great play of the part she played in "rigging" an election...despite her willingness to serve on that board, and two subsequent ones!!! all selfless, I do not doubt... she has secured her place, as have her comrades. She will soon leave our ranks, as will that attitude, I hope.

Many congratulations to you all.

Ironically this year's election was if I recall correctly just about as contested as the last one.

Father of the House

Postby Dickie on Fri Mar 23, 2007 12:12 pm

In the tradition of the AGM threads of previous years.

I open the thread to discusion as to who will be the new Father of the House and the criteria by which they are chosen.

How dull, Chris you have stopped the speculation before it had time to start.

I had hoped...

Why not Laura? She has been here longer.

Niall Kennedy, not Ian. I think I lost more votes due to improper LPH attire, namely my, apparently, too-lose belt. I must confess an appalling lack of knowledge concerning how to wear a kilt properly.

Actually, I got four RONs, and have seen the official vote count. Had I received five RONs, there would have been 30 votes for Chief Whip, and only 29 for all other posts.

As mentioned earlier though, 29 voters is quite a poor turnout. Last year, there were contests for Serjeant and Steward with all other posts going uncontested. This year it was the same. Last year's voting total was higher, though.

I believe that Miss Young secured 18 votes, Mr. Potton 3, Mr. Watt 2, and RON 2 in the schools secretary race. I may be wrong about that.

Cheers,
-Doug

If that's the rationale, then it's quite, quite wrong. Nothing against Miss Whitbread being Father of the House, but she should not be appointed for that reason.

Indeed not, for then it is not Father of the House so much as it is Former Convenor (no, I will not use Emeritus here).

What happens when the pro-Father of the House returns, does he take priority?

Also, shouldn't it be an adaptation of the commons idea of the longest serving member. I would propose that it should be offered based on the amount of time one has been here since first election to the board of ten. I have no idea, however, who that would be.

It ought not to be a requirement that the Father of the House has served on the Board.

The choice of the post of Father of the House has a few critera:

1, The longest serving member of the house who is entering their last year as a student at St Andrews.
2, The previous convenor if they are still about, if not then the person who did not become convenor at the most recent election, also in their final year.
3, ANYONE the convenor wants.

Well firstly Laura has served almost a whole year already as FotH.

As Rach pointed out in the Solatium the only person who knows what being convenor is like and who is around is generally only the previous convenor, and should be sought out as a good source for advice. Being given a titular position that recognises past contributions seems like a nice reward in my opinion.

And sorry for ending speculation so early, in the future I will prove as obstructive and obfuscating as possible!
We could also speculate who is going to run for what within Mermaids as that race is far less sown up ;)
