Pre Debate Drinks

Postby Laura on Thu Mar 22, 2007 4:03 pm

7.30 for 8 will once again mean something, as the Debating Society has finally won back the right to serve drinks in the Psychology foyer before debates, as confirmed with myself and Tom about ten minutes ago by the Head of School.

This is largely to do with the society's conduct over the last two years and the killing off of the 'get pissed up at debates' culture. Neither myself or Rachael were permitted to use the foyer for our events due to the noise and mess created the previous year, which was really sad given the type of speakers we managed to get. I hope you will all rally behind Tom and behave responsibly at drinks receptions from now on, and that we can hang on to this for the future.

It has also helped vastly that the society has done so well competitively, and has started to be seen as an asset in the University executive's eyes- this is something which I am sure you will build on in the coming year. This year, the society has had a great relationship with the sabbatical team, which has encoraged us to beg Dr Lang (successfully!) to help you get this back. It will be really great if this can also be continued next year so you can continue to get the helping hand you need!

Congratulations and good luck with the first debate after Easter-

I'm looking forward to my G&T.......

I am so glad, and well done to the powers at be for helping us get back to normal after a couple of years break. (Senit room would be pushing it I guess!!)

One word of caution. Should we have spirits of should we just have sherry and port. As there was not a problem before spirits were introduced.

It is fantastic that we have finally got the foyer back. I would like to thank Laura and Rachael for all their hard work in getting it back over the last year.

As to what we will be serving that is yet to be decided, but thank you Dickie for your suggestions.

I think the UDS should serve sack and ale for the older members, and small beer for the youngsters.

Am I the only one who thinks that terms like "UDS" and "IV Squad" are just a tad paramilitary?

Perhaps a shilling billing would be better?

Good News!

There will be drinks before tomorows debate. They will be held from 7.20 in the psychology foyer, entrance to which is via LPH. Sherry and Port will be served.

But surely that was the very pinnacle of all that is debating in St Andrews?

How did they survive without the predebates port. It was all that was on offer unless you wished orange squash...

p.s. If you were lucky it would be a nice vintage too.

Thanks to all who came. Many thanks to those who donated.

On the matter of drinks any thoughts. The port was very popular obviously. If we were to get some good (well, better) sherry in, say Harveys pale or something would people go for that?

One thing you do not want is for it to be too good, in that way you prevent people from drinking too much!
Port has proven to be the popular drink for many a year, indeed more than I can remember.
Sherry is less popular but you do need sweet and dry (fino & amontillado).

Gin was popular but a bit too much was drunk by too many too often! Whisky had the same problem (well for me it did!!!).

We always used to go with Harvey's Bristol cream. It's not bad to drink, and every few months Tesco will have an offer on where they sell litre bottles for less than the normal price of a 70c.

Alternatively, of course, you could just boost some of Jamie's stash after Chapel... ;)

Steal from Church! What kind of a society do you think we are?!

Shocking I tell you, shocking!

Well, actually, probably the real reason not to would be what my fellow choristers would do to me if they discovered pilfering!
