Worlds Trials

Postby mattina on Fri Apr 13, 2007 10:37 am

Next year the World Debating Championship will be held in Thailand over Christmas holidays.

Our A team has been preselected as Connie and Doug, given that they broke at Worlds this past past year reaching the semi-finals and have won a number of competitions since.

In two weeks time, we will be holding trials. It is likely that two rounds will be held on 25 April instead of Wednesday training with two more rounds held 27 April sometime in the afternoon. If we can manage three rounds on the Wednesday and then only one on the Friday we will, other wise two rounds each day. Exact time and location to be announced.

Trials will be on a team basis and predrawn by letter. Teams will randomly select a letter that will determine their position on the table for each of the rounds. All rounds will be tabbed by team and speaker points. This will be done by our panel who will also set the motions. Our panel will be Connie, Doug, Jason, Tony, and Diarmuid Early of UCC Debating Society.

We will be trialing judges at the same time.

We will be looking to select one team and two judges.

In addition, it is possible that a development team may be selected if they show enough merit, otherwise this will be trialed again in the future.

About this development team, a kind alumni, details to follow, had volunteered to fund a development team for Worlds. The criteria being that neither partner has ever spoken at an international tournament, they are, however, allowed to have judged.

Anyone wishing to trial must register by email by the 21 April to lem55. Also, please email if you have any questions.

Rooms:

Wednesday 25 April: 2-6 pm in NewArts 9

Friday 27 April: 2-6 pm in Buchanan 102

Please be prompt, if you are late you stand to be disqualified. Our mantra is the following: to be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is to be disqualified. We have the rooms for a limited time and the buildings get locked at 6 so we will be thrown out then regardless of where we may be in a debate.

Please also note that if you wish to trial as a judge you must also email me by the 21.

A note for those considering trialing for the devleopment team: I realise that you may have difficulty finding a partner, I suggest that you post that here with your name and email as it has been mentioned often to check the sinner for details.

So... do you have any teams registered to trial? Could you post them, and please specify which are new speakers? It would be good to see lots of new speakers trying out as there is a slot reserved specifically for them. Kudos to the 'kind alumni' who is funding that, I presume it should make trials more interesting all round, rather than letting those who have already been to several international competitions take up ALL the team places.

The deadline to register as a judge has been extended to the 27 April, this Friday. However, I expect a very good reason as to why you did not previously reg as a judge to accompany in your email.
Our esteemed panel has decided to hold judging trials separately to team trials, however anyone who has reged as a judge is welcome to come along on Wedneday, judge the rounds and the panel is willing to give feedback on judging that will not count towards trials but rather to help improve judging.

Registration for nondevelopmental teams is closed.

Anyone who is interested in the development team slot please let me know, even if you are interested but do not have a parter, please email me (lem55). This way, if I get two interested people, we can try pairing you up as a team.

Awesome work.
For clarification, which one of these is the development team?

Zoe and Frank are the development team. Considering the fact that they've been debating for a lot less time than any of the other teams and haven't spoken at an IV together (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) they managed to hold their own.

I'd like to congratulate Zoe and Frank too, they put up an admirable performance in the face of some pretty tough teams.

Judges Trials

Postby kdc4 on Thu May 17, 2007 9:57 pm

Trialling for judges for Worlds will be at 2PM on the 23rd of May at St. Marys Lecture Theatre 1.

Those not trialing as judges for Worlds are encouraged to come speak; it facilitates the trials and is good practice.

Please contact lmattina@gmail.com to inform the intervarsity secretary of your availability.

Best of luck to all with exams.

Cheers,
-Doug

And extra thanks to Connie and Doug for holding the trials (and of course Laura for putting up with everyone's schedules). I still want to see Joanna Nairn debate though. Doug, where would I find that?

*Side note to Doug: Saw a CNN special on obeisity entitled 'The Battle of the Bulge'. Thought the title was funny.

Fabulous Laura, thanks so much!

When it's too hot outside, I can think of nothing better than relaxing with some debating competitions.
