MAIDENS

Postby Jessica on Sun Oct 21, 2007 12:59 pm

What is Maidens?

A competition for people who are new to debating, who've never spoken at the table in Lower Parliament Hall.

What happens?

You can compete against other Maidens speakers in individuals fashion (3 on 3) this coming Saturday (Oct 27) all culminating in a debate in Lower Parliament Hall the week afterwards.

And if you win?
If you win, you are awarded £100. If you come second you get £50!

Post all questions on this thread and watch it for more info.

Presumably you mean this to read 'as students' - otherwise you exclude all those who have particpated in the Courier or in your schools tournament ... oops ... what schools tournament ...?

It's also worth noting that to be a Maidens finalist is a significant achievement, and one that any debater who's new to the Society and wants to get on in it would be well advised to go for. I'm still proud to have been a Maidens finalist, and the same could probably be said of most members of any Board of Ten.

Good luck everyone, particularly the Board in organising it!

Edit: don't worry, Irene, I was eligible and I don't think the rules have changed much since! ;)

Well done to all who took part, there was a marked improvement in speeches over the course of the day and it bodes well for teams for coming year.

The motion has been announced but I shall let Becca post here as I can't remember the exact wording.

That depends entirely on how many people enter.

There have been convenors who have presided over a final of 6 who had barely twice that many entrants, scarcely an achievement to survive the cull. There have also been years where ten times that many, and more, entered, much more impressive.

Yes, but when maidens is determined, not by your position in each round, but by how good your speech was irrespective of others in the room, looking at speaker points for the tournament as a whole is a good indicator that we have lots of good new speakers. Irrespecitve of how many came.

I agree, to an extent, but there can never be a truly objective standard and there will always be a certain amount of comparison to other speakers. But that's not what David said, nor would it really address the situation of 8 entrants and 6 finalists.
