Strathclyde and Edinburgh

Postby Jason on Fri Jan 18, 2008 3:54 pm

Hello all.

I don't know if St Andrews is sending or selection or anything but for those who are old enough to remember Jon Stewart and myself we will both be at both competitions. At Strathclyde the teams will be:
Jon Stewart & Niall Kennedy
and
Jason Vit & Kenny Fleming

at Edinburgh Jon and I will be speaking together although our team name is as yet undecided.

Hopefully we will see lots of you at one or the other.

Do you not have jobs to do and lives to lead?

Oh my-as long as Strathclyde and Edinburgh have been given due notice as to what to expect!

Indeed, little interest has been expressed up to now in either competition but as always anyone who wishes to attend please contact me at lem55 and I will do my best to accomodate!

Rumour has it that there will be another St Andrews + one team consisting of an Artful-Cochran...will there be others of a similar ilk?

Information Regarding the Edinburgh Open

Postby kdc4 on Mon Jan 28, 2008 9:27 pm

Cheers,
-Doug

********************************************

Registration is now open for the 2008 Edinburgh International Open (kindly sponsored by Allen and Overy) to be held on Sunday, February 3rd.

We know this will be our best and biggest tournament to date. It is an open competition, and in addition to a large number of British teams, we will also be hosting many of the international teams that will be participating in the European Parliament IV on the Friday and the Strathclyde Open on the Saturday.

The tournament will have 3 rounds leading to semi-finals. Speeches for the first 3 rounds will be 5 minutes in length, those for the Semi-finals and the Grand Final will be 7 minutes. The Grand Final will be held in our historic debating hall, where our Prime Minister debated in his student days! A black-tie Burns supper and an authentic Scottish Ceilidh will follow, with plenty of booze.

We will have a top-notch adjudication panel and judging pool led by our joint-CAs for the tournament: Adam Mckinlay (Scottish Mace Champion) and Barney Ross (two-time Scottish Mace Champion).

Crash before or after is available (with reasonable prior notice) to all attendants. Food will be provided throughout. Also, as this will follow the both the ESU European Parliament IV and the Strathclyde Open, we will be arranging free bus transportation from Glasgow on the
morning of the tournament. Registration will close at 11:30 AM.

The initial team cap is set at 60 with an institutional cap of 5 teams so we recommend registering early. The costs will be 35 pounds for a team and 15 pounds for an adjudicator. We would appreciate payment by cheque.

These can be addressed to:
The University of Edinburgh Debates Union

5/2 Bristo Square
Edinburgh
EH8 9AL

Please do not hesitate to contact Seb with any questions:

We look forward to seeing everyone in what we expect to be one of the largest IVs on the Scottish circuit this year!

Schedule:
Registration - 11:00
First to Third Rounds - 12 - 4:30
Semis - 4:30 - 6:30
Final - 7:30 - 8:30
Supper - 9:00
Ceilidh - 10:00

Rachael and I are getting the 7:37 train from Leuchars arriving at 9 am. Early but the other train would run the risk of missing registration if it was running late. Anyone leaving from St Andrews is more then welcome to join us!
