Excellent. The very best wishes, then, to Doug and Beth. Imago, could you advise me as to where I should look for the full tab? Incidentally, a very Happy New Year to you, the rest of the Union Debating Society, and all who post here. Have a great 2009. I hope the teams are making the most of the revelry in Cork.

From what I can see, Chris and Claire missed the judging break. Commiserations, guys. You can still put "Worlds" on your CV. As Imago has said, there's always next year.

Sorry Owen - I don't have a magic answer to that one! It'll appear eventually. Just keep checking Jens and Colm. If I find it before you do (geekery competition here, as you remarked earlier!) I'll post.

Every good wish to you and all the UDS for continuing and greater success in 2009.

It was good of you to thank Jens and Colm: it inspired a few more to do the same. (Innocuous glance.) As I mentioned earlier, Global Debate (Professor Snider?) is also one to watch, as he's posting videos. I missed "Tuna": is that Danny?

I think we'll have to wait until tomorrow at least for the full tab; most of them are, understandably, taking the day off. The Masters Final is tonight though, so now is the time for this board to be cheerleading (metaphorically) for Doug- I don't know when Beth's debate is, so I'll check the timetable again. The only other thing is Worlds Council: I assume Botswana, as the only institution bidding to host WUDC 2011, will be formally anointed later today.

A friend has written this on my Facebook status:
'St Andrews B missed it on speaks.'
So Miles and James must have finished on 18. Well done!!!

Hey All

Miles and I came 33rd, taking an annoyingly close second in the final round! This has been met by both congratulations and commiserations (possibly comgratulations?). Basicly people have been coming up and going 'Well done guys, you did so much better than we expected, but I'm so sorry you missed the break.' Personally, I'm delighted, first worlds, with a couple more left to go. Miles may be forced to do a postgrad.....

Claire ended up chairing in the penultimate round (not bin charing either!). She was then winging in a break round as well, so congratulations are in order. St Andrews A also ended up in a break room, unfortunetly have no idea as of yet what their final score was. The soicals have been immense and we look forward to seeing you guys soon.

Doug is also in contention for winning the masters indivual format, with a very entertaining speech.

Hello!

Thanks to James for updating but for my own purposes, allow me to point out Maddy I and were on 10 at the end of open rounds before we messed up the last day.

For anyone not also following Jens and Colm, here are the semi-finalists:
Monash B
Manchester A (Dan Bradley / James Dixon)
Oxford A (Will Jones / James Dray)
Oxford B (Shengwu Li / Kitson Symes)

Oxford C (JLM / Alex Worsnip)
Queensland A (Evan Goldman / ?)
Harvard A (Cormac Early / Lewis Bollard)
Vic Wellington A (Stephen Whittington / Polly Higbee)

I hope all these Facebook snippets which I have added are correct!
2nd edit - names of New Zealanders, all of whom tabbed in top 50 at WSDC 05
Evan Goldman is the Australian schools coach.

I'm just going to jump in and say WOW. I feel so proud of everyone, and I'm so jealous that I can't be there to be proud in person (and you, know, to CELEBRATE with everyone). How's the fun? How're the people? I'm jealous. So jealous.

I think we should celebrate again when we get back. Ideas?

Most people probably know every in and out of the voting by now if they've been following online - but for St Andreans tuning in to The Sinner only, the new World Champions are Will Jones and James Dray of Oxford A. Lots of you will remember Will from season 0304 when, as a pupil at Aberdeen Grammar, he with his partner Rose Grogan won all 5 Scottish university trophies (including St A obviously), went on to win the Ross Cup, also won Cambridge Schools and most famously won the Dundee IV, beating at least NHS and I can't remember who else in the final. He is currently the coach of the Scottish schools team.

Although we have yet to see a tab, the rumour that reached several St Andreans at Worlds (from sources that all eventually cited Bob Nimmo) was that James and Miles missed the break by 4 speaks.

What is confirmed is that their chair in the last round wanted to given them much high speaker points (which would have put them in the break) than the rest of the panel wanted to and eventually gave them.

Am told by a little bird who is cleverly able to type Facebook messages that they actually missed it by - one speak. We are assured somewhere that the tab is coming 'by the end of Monday' so we shall see if the little bird is right!

I heard from the honourable Danny P that we finished four speaker points short.... Now waiting for the tab with baited breath - anyone know where this elusive beast is to be found?

Tab is up. Go to Colm Flynn and follow link through Google.
And yes it was 4 points - maybe that's less teeth-grinding than one. Ah well - the little bird will be reading this eventually - sorry for passing on wrong info. Really well done to everyone - and admiration for Miles' new look as seen in photos - which is wonderful!

Re: Cork Worlds 2009 - Speaks/Alumni

Postby Kizzy on Wed Jan 07, 2009 12:49 pm

You're all right - it was 4 speaks...I do remember being told it was one, but 4 is a much less horrible number to miss by! Well done to all anyway, for a strong performance.

Now, a Serious Alumni Issue ;)
Claire, Ewan's UDS bow tie was last seen around your neck at the Championship dinner/dancing thing. Any chance you could post it back down to us? The address is on fbook.

Thanks,
Kizzy
