Blues and Colours

Postby Hooch on Mon Feb 02, 2004 4:34 pm

When and where will the blues and colours ceremony take place this year?

After acheiving the highest sporting award thaat the university has to offer, ie blues, what does implications or benifits are there?

Apologies for the tardy response Hooch. Easy question first the blues and colours dinner is on the 6/5/04, haven't confirmed a venue yet.

The award is to recognise the great achivements of our athletes throughout the year. To congratulate them on their success and to let them know that their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Having gained a blue, does the University see you in a different light - the way that Oxbridge treat their blues or Durham their Palatinates perhaps - well, not yet, sport is not integral to this university yet. It doesn't appreciate that our athletes are ambassadors for St. Andrews and until they do sport will be on the periphery.

Where do you go from there? Well, we (the Athletic Union) and the PE Dept are in the middle of setting up an Elite Athlete Scheme where athletes who currently represent their country (or are pushing to do so) in their sport, get financial aid, free use of facilities for their sport (including body workshop etc) and greater academic flexibility.

If that means you Hooch (or anyone else who is reading this, please email me on aupres@st-and.ac.uk and I will send you the relavant forms to fill in.

Hope that helps
