can anyone help me out with identifying the name of an anime?

my boyfriend can't remember the name of the first anime he ever saw, so if this sounds familiar at all to any of you then please let me know; the plot is that there is an evil sorceror/wizard is overtaking towns and turning people into stone (like statues but they are very block-y like squared off) and he's taken in a boy as an apprentice of some sort--- anyway the boy has a sister and he tries to protect her from being turned to stone and she ends up defeating the wizard and saving everyone...

i know it's pretty piecey but that's all i've got.
