You're a crazy man. Both of you are crazy men. I like Tori's first record, the second two are pretty good, but after that...Torrid Aimless, as a wise man (OK, it was John Lydon, but you can't have everything) once put it. Strange Little Girls was a suppurating pustule on the arse of contemporary music. Great songs butchered to make some half-arsed pseudo-feminist 'statement'...naah.

And Enjoy The Silence sounded just fine first time round to me.

Tori's cover was decidedly sub-standard. such a claim could be easily justified. Mark seemed to hit the right nail on the head.

however when it comes to Depeche covering other artists they're pretty good. Route 66 is simply the Behind the Wheel beat with the lyrics of Route 66 sung/read over the top. genius in it's simplicity.

then you get Martin L Gore's solo work, which is just covers. they're good as well, although they never really stand out as they're mainly drawn out ambient workings. he even covered Gone by The Comsat Angels. The Comsat Angels being a great band in their own right too.

David Gahan's new stuff sounds quite good. unspectacular but pretty good anyway.

Anyone else heard the Johnny Cash cover of Personal Jesus? First time I listened I thought he'd completely butchered it but it does kinda grow on you. He has a knack of making lyrics sound very 'meaningful', or at least like he knows exactly what he's singing about and believes it completely. Quite impressive when he's singing other people's songs.

Personal Jesus is on the same album that he covers Hurt and a few others (including that Vera Lynn song, "We'll meet again", which just sounds odd), so is well worth a listen. It's the third of the American recordings, think it's called "The Man Comes Around". Buy it.

Downloaded it after I read this and think its great. Love the piano in the background. Whenever he covers a song it seems to show up how good a song is in a timeless, genre-free manner.

last year i'd listened to that version a few times & i was in Nottingham with a few mates on a night out. there was a busker with an electric guitar & a mic next to the town hall. one of my mates dared me to sing something so i paid the busker something like a fiver & then sang about half of Personal Jesus into the mic. it was pretty random but a good laugh anyway.

Cash's version hasn't got the bounce or stadium sized atmosphere of Depeche's but that's helpful as a cover. so it ends up being nice & down to earth instead.
