well, have re-listened to it carefully & not really sure what you mean about it not being finished.....
Can't agree with any of the non-finished points you meantion.... the vocals are loud and clear all the way thru on the one i got :-S

but yea it could do with losing a few tracks near the end-this is true

I think it sounds good, but Radiohead are known perfectionists and this album doesnt seem to be as involving or dense as say, Ok Computer.

If there is any changes to be done then, knowing Radiohead the final released album will be a vast improvement and will become an instant classic... maybe

I have listened to and would like to give my verdict of the following recent releases:

HIM - Love Metal
White Stripes - Elephant

HIM i was quite looking forward to this because i really like the single. Ive never thought that much of their other albums and when i read good reviews of Love Metal (such an awful name) i was hoping for a consistent good old fashioned goth rock album... but this is not. Its just pretty boring. The start of the albums has everything i was expecting but the songs towards the end of the album are just plain dull. Id rather listen to The Mission 'Sum And Substance'

White Stripes. Wasnt that much a fan of their back catalogue: the debut isnt very creative, De Stijl is badly produced and White Blood Cells is basically built around the singles with everything else being filler, so i wasnt very excited about Elephant. But wow! This is good. Just like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion this proves that you can make a relatively large album (13 songs) of good listenable 'rawk' with the use of very little technology. Their isnt an unlistenable song, a breakthrough for a White Stripes album, and while the music isnt a radical departure, it is mainly this consistency that makes Elephant a surprisingly excellent album.

So, young kiddo, are you implying that The Mission's 'Sum And Substance' is a boring album? >;}

Hmmm, one of the better releases way back when, as I recall >;}

In other news, I am impatiently awaiting the (delayed) release of Apoptygma Berzerk's 'Singles Collection' which means I won't have to go and find all their old releases... Having said that, I've found most of tehm on Kazaa, but there's just something nicer about having the disc >;}

Sorry, just realised that could be taken the wrong way. I meant that if i wanted to listen to goth rock, i would listen to Sum & Substance. Its an awesome album, i think its better than Sisters Of Mercy Floodland or anything by Bauhaus or a lot of 80s goth music.

One of the best rocksoc nights i went to played The Cult She Sells Sanctuary, The Mission Deliverance and Sisters Of Mercy This Corrosion in a row. It was fantastic!!

differences between the 'unfinished' songs and the real versions ...

Postby splittter on Thu Apr 17, 2003 4:21 pm

this was posted to a mailing list I'm on ...

is supposed to be a run through of the differences bewteen the mp3 youi can get hold of easily, and the opfficial promo which is being distributed very paranoidly ...

01. 2+2=5: on my copy, in the intro noises to 2+2=5, you can hear, very
loudly, someone saying "hello" on a studio talkback mic and then thom
goes "that's a good way to start." on the mp3, this is buried all the
way in the background. the busted-tape-recorder noise goes on for about
five seconds longer in the mp3 than on the master. (soundwise, however,
it sounds very similar to the mastered version.) the guitar under the
"donbt question my authority" part is panned hard right in the mp3, but
panned dead center in the master. The panning of the squealing synth at
the end is opposite as well.

02. Sit Down. Stand Up: my "Sit Down Stand Up" begins with the beat
ticking away for about 14 seconds before anything at all comes in,
whereas the mp3 i have begins with the echoey xylophone and no beat at
all. The echo of the piano, panned center in the mp3, is panned left in
the master. The pulsing bass that comes in right before the change is
lower in the master.

03. Sail To The Moon: Therebs more vocal reverb in the beginning of my
"sail to the moon." Also, mine ends at 4:19, where the mp3 ends at 4:28
with nearly 8 seconds of silence at the end.

04. Backdrifts: my "backdrifts" has much louder music, where the mp3
version has the vocals standing out loudly above the music. it also cuts
at 5:22, where the mp3 cuts at 5:31.

05. Go To Sleep: my "go to sleep" has the acoustic guitar in the right
channel at a much louder volume than the mp3. the same acoustic also has
a wider pan across the stereo in the master, itbs squished into the
right and center on the mp3. philbs cymbals, all panned dead center in
the mp3, are panned left and right in the master, giving the track a
fuller sound. The second vocal track in the "you donbt really want a
monster" is panned to the left in the master instead of center in the
mp3. thom's voice also seems to have more reverb. the middle portion is
much less muddy.

06. Where I End And You Begin: the bass and drums are much louder and
thom's voice sits better in the mix on my "WIEAYB." Also, there's more
reverb on the drums, they're pretty dry in the mp3. there is also an
extra 4 seconds of silence on the mp3 at the end.

07. We Suck Young Blood: the vocal reverb is totally different (and more
tasteful) on my "we suck young blood."

08. The Gloaming: one of the biggest differences i detected was in "the
gloaming": my version clocks in at 3:32, the mp3 clocks in at 4:22. in
the mastered version, Thom does not sing again after the first time he
says "this is the gloaming." the repetition of the "when the walls bend,
with your breathing" part in the MP3 is not in the mastered. it cuts
past all of that right to the end, which is the same.

09. There There: "there there" sounds fuller, but there's no difference
otherwise.

10. I Will: my version of "i will" is 1:59, compared to the mp3 which is
2:24. there is no instrumental intro on mine, thom and the guitar come
in at the same time. my version of "i will" also leads directly into the
opening drum machine beat of "punch up at a wedding." there is no
silence between the two.

11. A Punchup At A Wedding: probably the biggest difference is "punch
up." the mastered "punch up" starts with a measure or two of the drum
machine beat, before phil and colin come in. also, the last chord of "i
will" is still ringing when the drum machine starts. in the mastered
version, thom does NOT sing a two-part harmony in the verse right away.
he comes in with one vocal, and a harmony joins him on the second part
of each verse. different vocal harmonies accompany him on the chorus.
there are clearly some bad edits on the mp3 version which are not on the
master. thom does not do those ridiculous little vocal adlibs (like hyp
hyp hypocrite). the sequence at the end does not go as long by itself on
the master. also, the master sounds MUCH fuller than the mp3, which
sounds very flat.

12. Myxomatosis: big difference in "myxomatosis" as well. the synth does
not pan around the stereo field. there are two gigantic synths in either
ear and they are stationary. everything is much louder. ed's guitar is
not panned center; it is panned right. there is also a weird noise that
swirls around behind thom's vocal that does not seem to be in the mp3.
the mastered version seems to use a different vocal take than the MP3,
which is good news for those complaining about the vocal. the vocoded
vocal that appears behind thom after "i been where i like" is only in
the chorus on the master. colin's extra funky bass does not keep going
after phil quits hitting the cymbals, it cuts right when the beat calms
down at the end.

13. Scatterbrain: no differences i noticed in "scatterbrain" besides
being louder and everything sitting better in the mix together.

14. A Wolf At The Door: instruments on "wolf at the door" are a clearer
and louder. the synth that sounds a bit like french horn is panned right
in the mp3, and panned left in the mastered version. (the panning of the
other instruments doesn't change, so it's not that someone flipped the
stereo image.) the loud acoustic guitar in the left channel of the
"nononono" part right after the chorus in the MP3 is NOT present in the
mastered version. the loud acoustic in the left channel at the very end
isn't there either

Hi all, just got the new Deftones album and I must say it's easily my favourite release by them yet! Phwoar! Marilyn Manson album's not as bad as I expected, and I've been trying to get the new Therapy album for a while now, anyone know if it's any good?

By the new Therapy? album, I presume you mean High Anxiety?

Well it's pretty good... Better than the last two offerings, and more in the vein of Troublegum (but not quite as amazingly brilliant)...

Haven't listened to it enough to give you some standout tracks, but it's good nevertheless >;}

Cool thanks, I agree that Troublegum is easily their best album, I'd heard reviews that it was very similar to that sound. I mught have to invest in a copy.

Not impressed with all the slagging of Mr Manson going on here, but I'll deal, as usual.

However, I bought the Evanescence album the other day and it's just sooooo good!!! Like Wow! Everybody should have a copy.

Don't know about other stuff, I'm a bit bogged down with learning band material and don't have much time to listen to anything else.
nevermind about the money...it's the penguins he's after, the ones you've got hidden in yer wookie!

if there's slagging off of Marilyn going on then it's very mild. he's made a record that very shiny but unsensational. it's worth listening to if you're a fan though.

but seeing as you mention 'learning band material' then the obligatory which band? what kind of band? & what's your role in the band? questions shall be asked.

I think the forthcoming Mogwai album 'Happy Songs For Happy People' will be quite perfect. And, yes, Deftones does indeed rule. Their best yet.

not an album but still relevant. VNV Nation will release Honour 2003 soon. an old song dressed up for the 21st century. seeing as it's earned itself an official release i'd hope it's going to be pretty impressive.

If you like VNV Nation, then you'll love this... I am desparate for this CD to be released...

The group is called Bruderschaft (meaning Brotherhood, apparently), and consists of the following fine fellows:

REXX ARKANA( lyrics ), SEBASTIAN KOMOR of ICON OF COIL ( music ), RONAN HARRIS of VNV NATION ( lead vocals ), STEPHAN GROTH of APOPTYGMA BERZERK ( backing vocals ) and JOAKIM MONTELIUS of COVENANT (loops

Oh yes!!!!

This release is a single, but a single with 13 tracks!!! And the double cd version has another 80 minutes of stuff too >;}

All proceeds go to cancer research

Can't argue with that >;}

It will be released in August (no date as yet)...

It's being released in two formats:

a. The single CD will have the original 13 tracks

b. The VERY (apparently) limited double CD release will have the extra 80 mins

You'd be lucky to find it in any mainline music store... I have only ever managed to find 1 copy of APB's '7' on import for £17 in HMV...

Best bet is to order online... I tend to use Music Non Stop (www.musicnonstop.co.uk), because they're reasonably priced, reliable delivery, and they have an extensive catalogue...

I've already pre-ordered mine >;}
