Melting pot song?

Postby Fugaziboy on Sat Oct 02, 2004 4:31 pm

I don't know if anyone knows who wrote the song melting pot?

Take a pinch of white man
Wrap him up in black skin
Add a touch of blue blood
And a little bitty bit of red Indian boy
Like a colour kinkies
Mixed with yellow Chinkees, yeah
You know you lump it all together
And you got a recipe for a get along scene
Oh what a beautiful dream
If it could only come true, you know, you know

What we need is a great big melting pot
Big enough big enough big enough to take
The world and all its got
And keep it stirring for
A hundred years or more
And turn out coffee coloured people by the score

Here are some of the lyrics. I heard Alan Partridge singing it on I'm Alan Partridge, and have no idea who its by?

Does anyone know? Its bugging me now!

Melting Pot

Postby oldie on Mon Oct 11, 2004 12:17 pm

This song was first released in 1969 and it was by Blue Mink. Don't know if they actually wrote it. I heard the original on the radio tonight and was surprised they were still able to play it...thought it may be a little too politically incorrect for today

After a bit more research...Roger Cook wrote this song, first released by Blue Mink in 1969. He was also responsible for such "classics?" as "I'd like to teach the world to sing", "Blame it on the pony express" and "Here comes that rainy day feeling again"

I remember the song well. Blue mink were a band formed of session musicians including Roger Cook, who wrote the song, and Madeline Bell, who was and still is a fantastic singer with her roots in gospel. It wouldn't do in todays PC world, but the intent was honourable. (I remember the fifth line as 'curly black and kinky.')
