THURSDAY 20th APRIL (This Thursday) - "Burnside and His Problem... or... what does a group theorist do anyway?"

In this talk, Dr Quick will tell us:
* what a group is (if you don't know already),
* why they are important in mathematics (they're not just used as an excuse to examine undergraduates),
* what sort of questions are considered in the study of groups, and
* why a question raised in 1902 by a British mathematician was one of the most significant in group theory and led to a Russian mathematician winning the Fields Medal some 90 years later.

Members and Non-members are welcome to come to this free event.

Maths Lecture Theatre C at 4pm on Thursday 20th April. Followed by wine reception.
