Invisibility Devices

Postby sat on Fri Oct 20, 2006 7:30 pm

QuantumSoc are hosting a talk by Prof. Ulf Leonhardt of the School of Physics and Astronomy. His subject is "Invisibility Devices".

This is very exciting for us since the BBC has only very recently reported the progress being made by researchers in both the UK and USA on manufacturing these devices.

Prof. Leonhardt has (independently) came up with similar theoretical ideas related to invisibility.

The talk is on Wednesday 1st November at 3:30pm. The venue is Theatre C of the School of Phyics and Astronomy.

I wonder if the shiny new Theatre C has the possibility of recording the lecture...?

Perhaps! That would be excellent. I haven't been in C since it was refurbished. Is it as shiny as Maths A?

It's horrible- there's no room! you're a bit screwed if you want more than a pad of paper on your desk and if you're taller than me (which is a lot of people)

But, I'm really looking forward to Ulf's talk. I bet it's going to be really interesting! Can't wait!

There are mutterings that there might be wine after the talk...

Just maybe.

Does anybody know how long the talk is?

And when they die they leave this place

Ulf hasn't given us a time, and we didn't give him one. But I'd expect an hour at most.

There may be questions afterwards though I'll have to check with him to see if he wants to take any. If he does we might break after the lecture to allow people to get away if they need.

Thanks to everyone who came to the talk. As I said at the start, I've never seen Theatre C packed like that before; for a physics society lecture at least.

I know there's less seats than before but there were over 90 people in there.

BTW What did people think? I'd say it was short and sweet. Typically Ulf - quite concise.

Yeah, I thought it was quite short. I was expecting it to be maybe an hour excluding questions but as it turned out it was an hour inclusive.
Maybe that was better though. With so many people sitting on the floor and stairs it can't have been that comfortable, and they probably would've started to get a bit restless if it went on much longer.
Still, a very interesting talk. Looking forward to any more guest lecturers Simon can arrange

i would think the people sitting on the floor were more comfortable than those in the seats. the new seats in that room are dreadful.

I don't mind the seats themselves, it's those little "TV tray" style fold-out desks that get on my wick. There's no room!
