SSH

Am I wrong in thinking that the default setup in the main library is for "terminal session" to open a window straight to central, rather than allowing an arbitrary host to be entered?

Surely it's not a security breach to allow us to shell into our favourite server!? (We could just SSH out from central anyway...)

It is my recollection, hazy as it may be, that if you select the option for "other host" from the popup app bit you get a standard putty open connection UI that works as normal.

Yes, it brings up a grid of buttons for different servers, but one of them calls up the PuTTY window as Tryptophan says. It's how I get into wired :)

Alternatively, you can just download your own copy of PuTTY to your home drive. Either works. :)

Yep... all the better for the fact PuTTY doesn't even need installed.

That's been my experience in places like the physics classroom. This, however, was from the main library PCs. Selecting "Terminal Session" from the Start menu (under communications or whatever it is) opened up an SSH window and connected straight to a host, which I assume was central.

I had no choice in the matter...

Perhaps another shortcut lurks elsewhere that does the "usual" things. It just seemed at the time as though "they" were trying to stop us shelling into wherever we wanted.

On the plus side, I'm sure I noticed a "LaTeX" icon in there the other day. This is a welcome addition. I was under the impression that only the Maths Microlab had MikTeX/Texniccenter installed.

I have definitely seen the grid in the library, but that was some time ago, perhaps they've changed it now. I also noticed the LaTeX shortcut on Sunday evening, but I didn't investigate, because I was only on a flying visit to print a manual.

ok, if you don't get the normal config window, let it try to connect to central anyway and then right click on the menu-bar at the top of the window. In the shell drop-down menu there should be an option for "new session", this should also give you a normal putty configuration window. Or, as orudge says, just grab a copy of the stand-alone exe to your home drive for later use.

I have a feeling I read in a recent ITS newsletter or similar that they recently installed various extra requested software onto PCs, or that they were going to. Presumably LaTeX was one such example, unless again it was just a departmental thing. I haven't seen LaTeX on a uni PC recently, but then I haven't used one in a few weeks.

Hmm, the new Maths Microlab PCs just give App not found etc. errors when trying to run just about anything. Those machines aren't properly configured seeing as running the same apps on machines in different labs works fine.

They've left the shortcuts though.
