Gaming in New Hall

Postby Andy on Thu Feb 21, 2008 1:48 am

A couple of years ago I used to play a friend in my corridor at Quake 3 a lot and it was simple to set up the server and start.

However, now it doesn't seem to work. Is it still possible to connect to game servers within the residence and if so, is there something specific I need to do to play against my friends?

No! No! A thousand times no!

[s]Unless they're on your subnet.[/s]

At the start of the 05/06 year, ITS tightened the ResNet subnet masks to 255.255.255.192 and 255.255.255.224 . I can't imagine they've brought them down much further. Traffic between subnets is blocked. For reference:

You'll only be able to see either 31 or 63 machines other than yours, i.e. those on the same subnet as you. The only gaming servers you're guaranteed access to from ResNet are those run by WiredSoc.

I stand corrected Billy! I was going on evidence of a number of posts in the Sinner archive.

If that's so, how do I do about starting a server thers can join? I've tried starting a local server in Quake 3 but it doesn't appear on the server list and entering my IP doesn't allow others to join either.

If it is possible then, how do I go about creating a server that others can see and join? I have tried creating a local deathmatch server in Quake 3 but my friends could not see it in the server list, nor join it by entering my ip. Am I doing something wrong?

They tightened the subnets on the "new" ResNet in 06/07 (not sure about the "old" ResNet). Presumably, they did the same again this year to the rest of the halls when they were brought into the new ResNet in 07/08.

Doesn't work any more, we used to play Unreal tournament in New Hall in 2005/6. Now it can't connect. But people still play in the computer room all the time, counterstrike and the likes
