if you're interested in alternative queer ideas, maybe you've heard of Queer Mutiny before. If not and you're still interested in something different from the commercial gay scene, there's a newish DYI group in Edinburgh addressing exactly that.

I went to their first party/get-together/event (music, free food, BYOB, film, dancing) last Friday and had a fantastic time, so will definitely go again... maybe someone's interested in coming with me/us?
I know it's based in Edinburgh and all, but it seems to be the only alternative gay thing around, so I thought I'd promote it here in St Andrews a bit.
