Fault in the observatory which is apparantly linked to our grid.

The story being banded around earlier was that it was the construction workers cutting through something they shouldn't have done.

It did cause a brownout right across town, however.

That was the popular theory floating around.

I do know that when the power went out, my housemate wandered outside to see if next door had power (as I was still in my PJ's) and someone yelled across from the building site asking if we had electricity. She answered no and the guy wandered off again.

That and the fact it was so sudden lead us to believe that there was either a fault or someone had done something silly, prefered belief being something silly had been done.
