Bloody Dryer!

Postby Jono on Tue Oct 24, 2006 7:53 pm

I just got my laundry out of the left-most dryer in the laundry room. I put in two pounds, thats a 99 minute cycle, and my clothes are still wet! What the hell?

It's bad enough that circuit jacked up the prices and reduced the time per 20p on the dryers, but this just takes the cake! They're effectively screwing residents out of money and not providing a proper service in return.

Can someone on the committie bring this to the attention of the powers that be?

Shame no one brought this up earlier so I could have taken it to the meeting I had with Roger Smith and Isobel Clifford this morning...

I'll mention it to the RMs and see whether there's a fault with the dryer - 99 mins usually plenty enough to dry them.

By the way - the secret laundry still works on the old system of 20p for 10mins...

thought they were 14 mins for 20p last year, and mine were still a bit damp after 50 mins (and i'd left them there for a while as well...)

If you want a committee member to bring it up with the RMs or higher then why not email one of the committee members with your issue rather than having a rant on the Sinner and half-heartedly mentioning the committee at the end?

Because I don't know any of the committie's Emails, and seeing as half the committie use this board anyway, I didn't see the point in finding out.

It did occur to me at the time that you'd had that meeting today Louise. Shame I didn't do my laundry yesterday. Oh well!

They reduced the time on that one... AND they've rigged it so that you have to pay a pounds worth in 20ps!! FUCKING annoying part 1... on top of that, like Sean said, the 50 minutes you get for your pound is not enough to dry your laundry... so unless you're clever enough to go back mid-cycle and feed more 20ps into the machine, you have to pay another pound for another 50 minutes.

How much do people pay for their laundry?

Last year I paid St-Andrews laundry £5 to pick my laundry up from outside my door, wash it, dry it, and deliver it back to me. I think it worked out a quid more expensive and for that I didn’t have the hassle of a floor to e floor, and all the changing machines, and correct change. I haven't done that this year so not sure if the price has gone up, but it's worth a thought if you lot are that dismayed with the current situation.

And to answer Rhona and Jon's points, I agree with Rhona that it should be brought to the committee before thesinnerbitching, but agree that we aren’t that well advertised, we are meant to be getting the hall website sorted out, I think jasper is working on it. Jon: Until the site is up there is a facebook group for the committee so if you wanna get in touch with any of us we are all officers of the group, with our positions and contact details.

BTW, I hate the washing machines too:@

I have considered laundry services before but really don't like the idea of some random going through my washing.

Plus there's something so satisfying about taking hot clothes out of the dryer (on the occasion it decides to behave itself and actually dry things) and folding them. Or is that just me being weird again?

I keep meaning to put up the list of committee contact details in the glass cabinet but the RMs are never there when I go to do it. Not that that's an excuse. But for now I can point you in the direction of the Facebook group, where you can then decide which lucky person you want to email with any issues.

It's so satisfying because it happens so rarely!! Usually you just end up with warm wet clothes.

An update on the actual topic of this thread.

A few of us spoke to Evelyn today about the issue with the dryers, and there's nothing the RMs can do about it. We have to take it to ResBus, as it's the whole university that has a contract with Circuit and it's not managed by the RMs. In the meantime, we can call Circuit (the number is in both laundry rooms) with our issues.

Hopefully if enough of us pressure them (ResBus and Circuit) we can get something worthwhile done.

JUst to add to that -
at the SRC Accommodation meeting yesterday afternoon, this was brought up by another Senior Student as a problem they had in their hall too. It was agreed that it was unacceptable that Circuit should hold the contracts for the entire University without question, allowing them to put their prices up year on year. It is now pretty much the same price to send your laundry away as it is to do it in hall. Ben Nicholson, the SRC Accommodation Officer, is contacting Roger Smith, Director of RBS, over the issue.
