So what are yours? Or rather, what are your aims for 2007? What achievements would you like to.. er.. achieve?

1) Stop going to bed so late.

2) Go to the gym n get buff (fortunately have a trainer to help me)

3) Do some actual bloody work for a change.

4) Try and be nicer to people.

5) Learn to move on and not swell so much in the past.

I, too, am going to get a haircut once I return to St Andrews. However, this is not mpart of my new year's resolutions. Oh no...

I think I'm going to have to go with, "Get fitter and don't go to bed at 2-3am every single night." Double-barrelled resolutions... ooohh...

Do work for a decent number of hours a day.

Get up for breakfast and be out of hall by 9AM every day (well... more or less).

Also, I feel that in the name of hall spirit, we should all try and make the common room less cliqy. how we achive that I don't know. Perhaps it would help if the sofas weren't dominated by one group of people twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

I have heared people mention/moan that the common room is cliquey but i'm not all that bothered as its by and large people who I like that have monopolised our once communal common room. Perhaps some big common room parties are in order after the exams are in order to get hall/common room spirit flowing again? or a B-floor party, there havent been enough of them yet either.

As for New Year resolutions I should probably loose some weight since currently about 1/3 of my body mass is superflious. Getting more work done and arranging something good to do in the summer are also priorities, and I should probably be nicer to people.

When I'm talking about the 'cliquey' common room, I'm referring to the fact that, last year, if you walked into the common room at nearly any hour there would be a different group in there, be it 'Cook and Krystal's mates', or the now 'Ardblair/Elis place crew', or the people hung around with mostly...there were always different people there and we used to intermingle with these different main groups. This year it is pretty much the same group. There is nothing 'wrong' or anything 'needed to be done to change this', it's just one of the things I didnt like about hall this year, and what I think contributes to hall spirit.

I think that the common room is slightly cliquey, but there's no point complaining about it on the Sinner as the only people who go on here are the people who often "clog" up the common room.

In any case, everyone knows the common room is there, but not many people choose to use it. Quite a few of the A-floor girls are just as cliquey and I once heard a rumour that C-floor had set up its own common room next to the green room or something. I think that rumour was proved false, but it proves that no one else seems particularly willing about going into the common room and intermingling with everyone else to try and dispel the problem when their first port of call is to create a new social area, rather than being friendly in the one they've already got.

In any case, the common room is being cliqued up by people I like, so I'm not too bothered, to be honest. :)

I'd agree with you there, it does seem to be just the same group of people in there.

Perhaps we just need to be more random - don't let people settle into a routine - keep 'em guessin' - more common room events might be a solution but I don't know - I don't actually have any good ideas - only that I'm thinking being a bit more random might be a good new years resolution.

There was a C floor common room, they used the other study room and nicked two of the couches from the common room. What we need is better furniture for the common room, but that rant is as old as the hills and bugger all will be done about it anyways.

The thing is, you can't say 'we should do this or that', if the same people want to hang there everyday then why is that wrong? As for hall events; Alex and me run a Tea and Coffee evening every other week, normally Mondays. Again its the same few peopole turning up. You can't say we don't try!

I would say that the "clique" that uses the common room or small tv room isn't a clique at all. It's just a large group of friends, friends who vary from 1st to 4th year, different floors, different groups within that group etc. While people may find this group intimidating and might think people outwith this group aren't welcome, that's certainly not the case or the impression given off, at least not in my opinion. If people were really that bothered about the same people using the common room, why not make an effort to try and get to know these people, or come along to the events like Riho mentioned? It's all very well saying "we need to stop it being so cliquey" but other people need to make the effort too.

Anyway, onto my own aims for this year:
a) Funnily enough, spend less time socialising in the common room/small tv room
b) As a result, spend more time actually studying
c) Get back into the routine of going to the gym
d) Keep my mouth shut

Two of the sofas were pinched from the common room and put in the other study room next to the main stairwell on C floor.

It all comes down to soft furnishings. Last year we had the old sofa, the armchairs, and the new stuff too. So there were like three hubs, or whatever!

Agreed. The common room is to be used by whoever want to use it. And if this year it happens to be the same people quite often, then that is fine. People can hardly complain about the McIntosh residences using the common room!

Get over it.
