DRA - Ask Away

Postby James01 on Mon Aug 14, 2006 6:25 pm

I lived in Donaldson 6 Last year and will be a resident of Donaldson 9 next year.

I'm a second year but will be 17/18 this year so i should be able to relate a lot better than most 2nd years.

Before anyone asks the best way to translate your accomodation details are as follows:

DRA/DN0602 (Mine from last year)

Translates as: DRA = David Russel Apartments

DN = Donaldson House (basically a block of 12 self-contained flats) There are roughly a dozen such Houses.

06 - Flat 6 of 12. Flats 1-3 on ground floor, 4-6 on first, 7-9 on second, 10-12 on top.

02 - Room 2. (Each flat contains 5 rooms and a kitchen/living area). All rooms are roughly the same and have there own En-Suite with Shower. Room Highlights include Double Bed, Tv's and good open wardrobe.

I'll post a full list of all the DRA houses and their abreviations soon. In the mean time feel free to ask away.

TU = Tulloch
HR = Herkless
SH = Shairp
NI = Nisbet
LG = Lang
HL = Haldane

What is the best way to find people to talk to in DRA?

Well you'll find that the by the end of the year your really close to people you share a flat with (the other 4 guys/girls).

Otherwise, the committee is really good at organising events such as barbeques, which really good fun. Keep an eye out for events on the noticeboards.

The facilites building has a bar which is opened some night (not sure which) and opens for big events (like last year it showed all the champions league games.)

There is also a tv room that you can use (if noone else is) and watch your favourite programs on the huge projecter.

Watching Top Gear there last year was sooo cool.

Knock on the doors of the other flats on your floor and invite them round for a drink.

I'm going to be in Donaldson 11 and I'm a little weary: is the walk to science buildings and/or the center of town really that bad? I don't mind a mile or two walking, but I seem to have read quite a lot of griping about it.

tbh its not far, 15mins to science walking.

Do what i did and get a bike, you can leave at 9am and still make 9am lectures! (they dont usually start till 5 past the hour!)

Its all downhill to science so a bike is really good.

For your first year they should be single sex

ususally, the flats are single sex when you move in in first year, they try their very best to do that. But I do know of one 1st year flat last year that was 4 boys and a girl....and that worked out fine!

Flats are same sex when you move in, but I know plenty of people who switched rooms with others and obtained mixed flats (4 guys and 1 girl, or vice-versa and any combination thereof).

As for the walk, it really isn't all that bad. Going to the science buildings takes 15 minutes by foot, and you can be at the Union in 25. The lazy alternative is to take the bus that runs regularly into town, and stops right in front of the Facilities Building to pick up and drop off passengers.
