Rocksoc

Postby H on Thu Jun 07, 2007 11:05 pm

Greetings to all students old and new. I am Henry, this year's vice president of St Andrews Rock Society (Rocksoc), but I generally go by H. This is just to

tell you a bit about Rocksoc, who we are, what we do, and most importantly what you can get involved in. The society, is primarily a place for anyone to come

along, get to know lots of new people from a very diverse collection of backgrounds, have a drink, listen to some awesome music. Obviously the music is

angled at lovers of all forms of rock, but all people are welcome in the society, if you want to come along for the music, the booze, the socialising - you

are all welcome.

The biggest and most common events that the society runs are the fornightly club nights. These take place on a Thursday evening, usually starting at 8.00 and

running through until 1.00 in the morning. Throughout the course of the night, there are three DJs, each playing a set of approx 1.5 hours, and consisting a

huge range of rock from Metal to Punk to Industrial. They take place in venue 2 in the students union, with a bar, and just a place to chill out, have a

drink, chat to your mates, meet loads of new people and just generally have a great night out.

Also, throughout the term, we run additional events such as pub crawls and film nights, but we are constantly looking for new ideas for events.

Every halloween we have a big event in Venue 1 in the union, with costumes, prizes, DJs, live music, copious amounts of alcohol - all of which truly does add

up to a great night out.

Last semester, the society ran a joint event with Musfund - Rocksoc Live. We took over the venue 1 beer bar with a night of live music, with a bit of a

Karaoke/Open Mic session to kick off the evening. We are looking to continue this with further events of this type in the coming year.

Well hopefully all that has given you an idea of what the society is about. Check out the society website http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~rocksoc and message

board societies/rocksoc for more info.

During the Thurday of Fresher's Week this year (27th September), we will be holding a club night in Venue 2 starting at 8 as usual...come along and check out

what rocksoc is all about, and also don't miss our stall at the fresher's fayre!! I sincerly look forward to meeting many new people next year, and welcome

you all into our society.

Excuse me mate thats not really helping thanks. We are a brand new committee and we are trying to move rocksoc forward, so comments like that really aren't a help.

To any prospective first year rocksoccers: please ignore silly comments like this, rocksoc is different from year to year depending on the committee and the members but it has never "sucked ass"...if any of you have any questions feel free to message me.

Cheers

H

It might help if someone mentioned what exactly Rocksoc is all about.

I’ve been a member of this society for the last two years. I enjoy it immensely, and know most of my best mates in uni through it. Sadly, last year I didn’t turn up as much as I wanted because I’m crap at organising my work around things; preferring to steamroller it solidly in the last week before deadline, to the detriment of my social commitments.

First off the bat, when people say Rocksoc; it’s not what it is in other universities. Since it’s inception in 1991(?), St. Andrews Rocksoc has been dedicated to metal, punk and heavy rock in its various forms. While the selection has (presumably) changed since those days when I was a pants-pissing toddler (well, five anyway), the general play-list still overwhelmingly devotes to this sort of music. In contrast, most “Rocksocs” in other Unis are in regards to Grunge, Indie, and so forth.

Last year we had a DJ night every other Thursday night; 8 till close. There are sometimes things going on to fill in the bi-weekly gap (I will take this opportunity to remind Zak and H that it costs £0 of society money to stage a pub-crawl, even if no one turns up). Even if you’re not paticularly fond of metal, I’d recommend that you turn up for at least one session. Just for the chat, as they say in some circles.

Personally, I think Rocksoc is one of the best societies out there. It’s got history, but it’s not up itself about it like some societies. It’s open and friendly (at least as much as any other society). It’s a haven for the more alternative individual. And, as far as Freshers go, it’s a great place to meet people. I have to admit, I (sadly) don’t remember half the people I met the first time around.

There are plenty of societies to join up to, come freshers week. From this one, I’m looking forward to the free jaig and cokes making their welcome return to the freshers fair table!

This is very true. I, in all honesty, don't enjoy metal (no offense guys!); but at the insistence of a few friends who are Rocksoc members, I've showed up to a few events and nights and had a fantastic time and met fun people, including my academic mother!

RockSoc...erm...rocks.

Go to it. Even if it's one night (Freshers Rocksoc!) and you never go again, it's worth the experience.

rocksoc is not worth it. i was really looking forward to it when i first heard about it, but the music is usually tasteless metal and the people are all pretty boring drunks. and fat girls' boobs popping out of their too-tight corsets is not a pleasant sight.

Rocksoc is a union affiliated society. It is therefore what its members make it. When I were a lad the drunks were not boring (quite the opposite), but yes, the fat girls boobs were still fat.

You can't call us ALL boring drunks, that's just not fair!

And as for girl's boobs popping out of their corsets....how, when, where, what?

Tasteless metal?! What exactly is tasteless about metal? Its a genre that holds far more musical merit than rap, R&B or pop, so I think you should take that one back

Rocksoc guys aspire to sit on that bridge on camden high street and have people take pictures of them. Lofty goals since most of them never make it out of Glasgow.

Rocksoc chicks are fat... not at all like the lovely pashmina-wearing sloanie ponies one can find in any respectable upper-middle-class drinking establishment on North Street.

Not making it out of Glasgow must make it tricky to attend Rocksoc in St Andrews.

You must bear in mind that rocksoc is a different society ever year. It is VERY MUCH under new management this year, so any past experiences you have had can be put aside. Also, this thread was meant as positive publicity to new students, so any negative comments aren't really helpful, especially as the new committee are doing their absolute best to push rocksoc in the right direction from now on.

Some of the girls that attend Rocksoc are not stick insects and some of them are overweight. But have you ever thought that part of the reason they come to Rocksoc is because it is the only place where they can find friendly, unbiased people who will accept them no matter what their weight, what they wear or what class they are perceived to be associated with.
