The Students' Union

Postby Doc on Tue Aug 21, 2007 6:25 pm

Hi I'm going to be a Fresher in September and I've been reading about the Union but I'm a bit confused - I thought it was just going to be a venue!

Is there a simple breakdown of how it works anywhere? Thanks!

Hmm, briefly put, the "Union" is the building in which the Students Association operates. It has a bar, multiple venues, and all sorts of services and suchlike. The Students Association represents all St Andrews students, through the Student Representative Council (SRC).

No doubt someone will correct me on something, but that's a very simple guide to things.

All three are colloquially referred to as 'the Union' though, which may well be the source of your confusion.

You should find that answers most of your questions. Remember - Your Union™, more than just a Bop™ and a bar!™

You'll also find a bookshop (Blackwells), Student Support Services, Student Voluntary Services, The Saint newspaper office (I think!), the general office (photocopying, binding, faxing), STA Travel (student travel service with decent deals on flights, tours, train tickets etc), the design team, Beatons cafe during the day in the main bar (including vegan food), offsales (off license with snack food)... allsorts really!!

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the substrate.

If you ever have any problems with ANYTHING go to Student Support Services who are on the middle floor of 'The Union'. Alternatively you can speak to Steve Savage the Director of Representation (a ex-student who is now on Sabbatical)or Iain Cupples the Student Advocate.

A little difficult to navigate at times, but it's all there if you try hard enough.
