webcams and resnet

Postby shil on Thu Sep 27, 2007 1:16 pm

I arrived in St Andrews yesterday and the first thing I did was buy an ethernet cable and a webcam to connect to resnet. Unfortunately, upon connecting my webcam, it appears to work great if I'm just looking at myself, but I can't get it to work properly in MSN messenger. I'll start it, the other person will accept, but for some reason it just won't connect.

Is this a problem with MSN messenger? Will it work in skype? Or does the internet in residence block video calls?

And what about voice calls... once I get skype, I will be able to call home, right?

The only program I've found that'll easily let you use a webcam over Resnet is Skype. ITS block the ports that MSN Messenger uses for video or voice communication, but Skype tends to be pretty good at getting around firewalls.

Yes, you'll be able to use Skype for voice calls from resnet.

When I was in Melville in first year I could occasionally use my webcam over MSN or Yahoo Messenger, but not always. When I was back in halls in my final year it was a total block... but you can get proxy bypass software to get around it, but they are kinda illegal I guess.
