DO NOT COME HERE!
I LIVE MY DAY TO DAY LIFE WAITING UNTIL THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY TO ESCAPE. THE BARS CLOSE TOO EARLY AND THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ACADEMIC SHIT TO FILL YOUR TIME. CURRENTLY WE ALSO HAVE A LOWER EMPLOYMENT RATE THAN OTHER GOOD SCOTTISH UNIS. THERE ARE 30 GIRLS TO EVEY 1 MAN AND THE BLOODY PLACE IS FULL O AMERICANS CHASING AFTER WILL, OR SIMPLY LOUSING UP THE PLACE WITH THEIR LOUD ACCENTS AND POOR SPELLING.

oh my word

Postby ilovegin on Wed Apr 27, 2005 12:11 pm

dont. just dont. run run very fast very fast. unless you like meeting everyone you know in tescos on a sunday morning when you're wearing your pjs and you hair is stuck to you head. and you go to dundee for the day and get EXCITED. seriously, now, when i go to a city i wear my handbag under my coat because i am now scared of people i dont know. you can walk the length of the town in 2 minutes, unless you're in heels then it takes you 2 hours coz of the FECKING cobble stones. hint: quaint town nice for a weekend or if you wanna pretend you live in the 1400s. which you can do, until some A-hole tries to run you over in daddys BM and you realise that the people here dont need to go to uni because grand-papa owns 25 acres of prime pheasant hunting land in the yorkshire dales.
when packing remember your essentials:
flip flops for all year round
your very own tweed jacket and pipe
golf clubs
some sort of granny-battering device.
oh, and a great big massive amount of money for costa coz its the only shop in this hole.
Catherine has given a rim job...without a dam!!!

The only reason I would tell people not to come here is because I want it all to myself. Or because they're American (like me)... we're clogging up the place.

There are two types of people. Those who love St Andrews and those who hate it. Most of those who hate it were too dense or too lazy to check the place out first and they then spend the next three or four years moaning about the lack of clubs and "decent" shops.

Anyways, I am American and I like it well enough here. i hear it takes a hell of a lot more to get in here nowadays though if you are an IR student as i am. the town is a bubble from which you feel you will never escape at times, but you are always itching to go back and you smile as you see the clock tower as you approach town. there is stuff to do, but most of it incorporates drinking in some way and if you like shopping forget it, we have like two mediocre stores that sell clothing.
money is a factor here whether we like it or not, as my associate ilovegin stated and the cobblestones are bastards no matter what shoes you wear. all 3 beaches are nice, the castle and other assorted old things are picturesque. there is something for everyone here, but once againas my associate stated, you might like it here more if your tastes included: gin, tweed and cashmere pashminas. you may not wear them now, but you will my pretty and oh god is it grand!

There is only one thing you need to know about St Andrews; if you are a fun person who knows how to socialise wisely, you will have the best time of your life. If you aren't, then you will spend four years in The Raisin getting drunk on vodka and wishing you were in a city with cheap drinks and other yobby things.

I love St Andrews, and am SO glad that I came here. I assure you, you will never do anything better.

Go for it!

Seriously, because you'd fit right in... When I started there was meant to be one third Scottish students in the student body... It never felt like it, and it's definitely nowhere near it now. So, for an American looking for the right 'college' you'll be in good surrounds.

I'll miss the auld town when I leave in a week, if only for the guaranteed opportunity to slag off yanks and toffs.

Are you able to come and have a look for yourself? I think that's probably the only way you'll know for sure whether it's right for you. It's a small place, but maybe you'll like that...personally I feel a bit claustrophobic in St Andrews at times, and the nightlife isn't that great, BUT Dundee is close by and easy to get to for clubbing and shopping. Even Edinburgh and Glasgow aren't too far away. I've just finished my first year, and found it pretty expensive here, particularly accommodation (I was in DRA), and so compared to friends at other unis I have spent a lot more than them. But if you're prepared for that, or money isn't a problem, then the cost of living might not be that big a deal to you.

In my first semester I wanted to transfer unis...hated the place in fact...but now I really do appreciate St Andrews, it's beautiful, and you get a uni experience that is so different to most people. I've realised how lucky I am to be here!

When you're deciding it really depends on what you want from your time at university...if you're after lots of people, great nightlife, and basically a bustling city life, then don't come here...on the other hand if you want to come to a place where you will see someone you know every time you walk down the street (and you WILL!), you're happy with quieter nihtlife, and you'll appreciate gorgeous scenery (like the beaches), then St Andrews is the place for you!

Hope this helps! Good luck with it all!

yes seriously consider coming here

Postby the coo coo bird on Tue Jul 19, 2005 6:36 am

this looks like its not been posted in a while but incase the girl who originally asked about st andrews sees this i will write a little something.

st. andrews is small. st andrews is mainly expensive. st andrews is filled with too many rich people who dont know how to act decently (i have nothing against rich people in general). st andrews has too much of a culture whereby working and middle class folks slag off the rich people.

however! as far as im concerned this doesnt detract from the pontentially amazing place that the town can be. yes it has its drawbacks but it also has (i think) a wonderful sense of community, a highly respected university!!!, three amazing beaches where you can swim, relax, build fires, and fish (among other more odd past times), an unbelievably picturesque castle and cathedral as well as the many other old buildings that permeate the town, and the surrounding countryside is amazing for walks etc.

if you are looking for late nights in clubs then you might as well not even bother applying. we dont have this. however st andrews has more of a culture of flat parties than most other unis i know of. the latest closing is 1am sun-wed and 2am thu-sat. the party life is still alive just not like most other places.

i really hope you consider st. andrews. just be aware that it is very different to most other places! also. i like many americans but please dont be one of those foul mouthed pretentious up-themselve's assholes! other wise welcome.

Aye, to mirror two of the previous posters:

Lots of nice students, but more arseholes in general (and funnily enough either foreigners or from south of Birmingham). I've just graduated, miss the place terribly; however, when I'm there, I feel bipolar at times - calmed and relaxed by the air of academia and the surroundings, and utterly pissed off by the wankers around me.

Come visit. Oh, and be careful how you use the term 'college'. If you're referring to United, or St Mary's, for example, you're alright. Most of us would use the term 'uni' or 'university' in the main.
So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

"I make sure the shit stays off the fan."

I would recommend you come to st-andrews, it's a fun place, very pretty as has already been mention etc.... And though it has it's share of twats, americans and posh gits spending daddy's money so does everywhere else and there are actually regular folk here like me and most of the folk i know who lead fairly normal lives and go get pissed out of our faces everyday, if you like meeting new folk and socialising then it's well worth coming to st-andrews
