[li] first years have highest priority for places.
[/nl]

Yeah thats rather wrong.

All returning students get single rooms.

Therefore the priority for single rooms is in fact not for first years but returning students.

Badly put, I'd agree.

First years have priority for places (not individual rooms). Returning students get priority for single rooms (not places), but after March/April they have no priority at all in the residence system (unless, of course they have accepted a place). So if a single room is empty (today, say) then first year students have priority for it.

There are places in single rooms that are not offered to returning students (but not many).

Yes every room has a sink and a mirror as far as I am aware.

In theory alot of things are supposed to happen in hall. Personally I think there should be more events. The amount of "official" events is decided by the committee.

If you want to make sure more events take place you can join the committee. The following positions will be available:

Entertainments rep
Librarian
Computer rep
Domestic convenor
male sports rep
female sports rep
international rep
SRC rep
male first year rep
female first year rep
second year rep
third year rep
fourth year rep

More details will be available for each position in the committee section when the new website is up.

What happened to the ball and charities convenors - three of each were usually elected in September (Senior for each in April). Or is there no ball in Chattan next year?

Ball convenor and charities have already been selected. Why I dont really know.

The committee position is usually what you make of it. You can work hard or you can do nothing. However you may get a bollocking from David Lindsay (Senior Student) if you mess around because he'll be the person that will have to do it.

Some people would say the committee is a nice way to meet people. Others would say joining could gain you powerful allies or if you are a "CV builder"/scum something else to put down on your CV.

I'd say its just a good way to help people or make change.

There is a pin board in every room.

The RM's are a bit arsy (unfortunately they are following rules its nothing personal from them - at least I hope) when it comes to putting things on hall property, especially when it comes to you doors. Did you know that a single piece of paper on a concrete wall in the common room is more flammable than a stack of newspapers on wooden table supported by a wooden floor? No neither did we and it got removed for that very reason.

Some almost all of the rooms have "picture rails" which is essentially a bit of wood nailed to the wall. Judging from the gaping holes and remains of bluetack one would suspect this is what you could attach your posters to. Alas normal and reasonable thinking is not in the residential department's dictionary.

How does one put up a poster without it touching the wall, picture rail and ceiling? Well I asked the RM's and it turns out you can use attach your poster to a picture rail hanger (s shaped device). Thus ensuring no warnings or fines.

Stupid residential system invoking daftass rules and making the RM's enforce these rules.

Welcome to hall by the way...

Just remember that the doors have handels but push in. Coming home from the first pub crawl I was stuck outside for a good half hour in a less than perfect state trying to pull the damned door open.

Thanks. So where do you get those picture hangers? So does that mean I cant have my jonny wilkinson calandar on the wall either? This seems crazy. I mean we all have posters on our wall at home!

Any Ball Convenor worth their salt will start doing things before we break up, if not before their election. Charities needs to do stuff in fresher's week.

Now you know.

Thanks Sherlock we've been investigating that one for a long time.

To be fair anyone worth anything on the committee should be thinking ahead now. If Ball convenor can be elected before the next year I dont see why ents, librarian, computer rep and second to fourth year reps cant be elected too.

Mary, the picture hangers should be available at your local hardware store. Alternatively there is a place in St Andrews that sells them. Almost on the corner of South Street and Bell Street.

Yeah dont try and turn the handles on the outside of the door or we KNOW you're new. Its quite hilarious to see people struggle turning the handles in various ways and you simply walk up and push the door. Ah the look of sheer embarrassment.

Because the last decent ents rep was a first year, the librarian for the past few years had been a first year, and computer rep is a job that people have to be unaware of the nature of the job to actually volunteer for it. Also because I and my chronies blocked putting those elections before we broke up during an important constitutional meeting, harnessing the powers of the majority vote.

That was changed in April 2001. Until then most positions were elected in the previous academic year. This was changed (apparently) because:
[l]
[li] The meeting was poorly attended.
[li] Well over half the hall had no say in who was elected to represent them (as they arrived in September), and most of these who had a say had left.
[li] There was less scope for new students to join the committee (due to lack of open positions).
[/l]

Of course those on the committee should be thinking ahead. The Senior Ball Convenor should have organised a venue for example. But that does not explain why there are no places for the other Charities/Ball Convenors on the subcommittees.

Yeah dont try and turn the handles on the outside of the door or we KNOW you're new. Its quite hilarious to see people struggle turning the handles in various ways and you simply walk up and push the door. Ah the look of sheer embarrassment.

That reminds me of the similar happening:

Over one Easter, the handle on the small door at the end of the common room had been fixed. It was amusing to watch all those who had got used to just pushing the door open, running straight into the door. Needless to say, the handle was broken again within a week or two.

There's fun to be found on the first night, it's just slightly harder to find. Wimps watch Parkinson, on my first night I was wasted from a party I'd thrown the night before, and wasn't actually sober at uni untl some time in week 3.

On a related note, I need children of both genders, the weak of reslove and the prudish need not apply.
